How to enable cheats in Half-Life 2 ? I know that the "~" key is supposed to enable the console. However, from what I researched I need to enable this key via the Half-Life 2 executable. This is apparently done by adding the "-console" switch which at the end of the executable. From what I understand this enables access to the console mode where cheats and such can be entered.

I tried adding that to the executable in the Steam Directory. Since Steam starts the game, I am not sure it is reading it right. No luck. I can't seem to get it to work.

So, what do I need to do to get it working?

    Thanks for any help.

No, not the actual .exe file. Go to (or make) the shortcut to it (tends to appear on your desktop unless you told the installer not to or moved it) and add the -console switch to that.
Funny, though, because pressing ~ brings up the console for me without the switch. I don't use cheats, though, and I can't recall if it's needed to enter codes.

Thanks for the info, I will give it a try. I am really not using it to cheat. My 4 year old daughter wants to drive the hovercraft and the dune buggy. I don't think she needs to be seeing those headsucker thingies and all the destruction (but it sure is fun!)

What do you mean by "...make a shortcut to it?"

    What is "it?"

    Thanks.

Dont mess with that, start half life 2. Then click options, then keyboard settings, then advanced. Then enable developers console.

That might explain why I never had to enter a switch.

For future reference, a shortcut is the icon that tends to appear on your desktop with a little white curvy arrow in the corner of it. This isn't the actual executable that runs the program. It's a shortcut, hence the name.
To make one, right click on the program's exe and click either "send to...|desktop (create shortcut)" or "create shortcut."
