    Hi all,

Was recently infected by the Ramnit worm. I am not sure how; I am a scrupulous browser on the net; perhaps I have not updated the odd program as much as I ought to. Still, I have run some checks with the programs you recommend, and gone through the procedures. I am not sure if I am still infected, though my Symantec Auto-Protect seems to have stopped going berserk in its attempts to fight the worm.

I attach logs for your consideration, and would appreciate any procedural guidance.

Please Disable Spybot's TeaTimer --> Should have been done as per the R&R instructions!

    * Run Spybot and click Mode
    * Select Advanced Mode.
    * Then click Tools and select Resident.
    * Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    * Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    * and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    * Now quit Spybot!

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

My computer still seems a bit stodgy. I've run Combofix/MGLogs as requested, but I've noticed the DesktopLayer.exe file has resisted Combofix, just by searching on Explorer. Just as I was writing this post, my re-enabled Symantec announced it had quarantined a 'Suspicious.MLApp'

    Let's try it again.

Download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now let's use ComboFix.

    Hi TimW,

Please find the attached logs for your consideration.

Can you use windows explorer to find and delete these:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Templates\2Q757bFxJ7S
    C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Templates\78x786VW07S4

Now I need you to click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK to open a command prompt window.

    • Now hight the below bold text with your mouse and hit CTRL-C to copy it into the Windows clipboard
    %systemdrive%\MGtools\vfind.exe -ltf -s 57344 "%systemdrive%\*Srv.exe" > %systemdrive%\findsrv.txt
    • Now right click in command prompt window and select Paste to copy in the above copied text and then hit enter to run the command.
    • This will take awhile to run thru all files and folders on your PC so just wait for it to finish. When it finishes, your command prompt line will return.
    • Now attach C:\findsrv.txt log

After doing what TimW last requested. Please immediately do the below. You must do this immediately and you must complete all 3 scans one after the other with only the delay to post logs in between. DO NOT use your PC for anything else but these instructions.

Run this Using ESET's Online Scanner and immediately attach the log.

Then run the Eset scan a second time and attach the 2nd log.

Then run the Eset scan a third time and attach the 3rd log.

After attaching the 3rd log, if any Ramnet infections were found by Eset, try to repeat the above until it comes up clean. The only infections of Ramnet you can ignore, are ones that may be found in the System Volume Information folder which is System Restore and cannot be cleaned. We will remove them later by disabling System Restore.

Great those are detecting many of the infected files. Try to keep running Eset scans one after the other until it comes up clean.... if it ever comes up clean. If it does not come up clean after the 5th scan then just stop and post back. But please after each scan, attach the log so we can see if any progress is being made.

Even if one infected file remains, this infection you have will continue to infected many system files and will spread throughout your hard disk or any flash drive you plug into it or any PC networked to this one.

NOTE: Your logs will not come up totally clean since you have a bunch trapped in System Restore files as shown in your logs where you see infections found in the C:\System Volume Information\_restore folder. So when you finish your next scan disable System Restore ( see Disable And Enable System Restore ) Then continue on with followup scans as requested.

That's great. Did you already disable System Restore before that scan? It looks like it.

Let's stop for the moment with the Eset scans and quickly do the below.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working right now!

Now I'm not so sure. My computer all but crashed 68% through the scan, I couldn't even take a log - but annoyingly, it looked like it had come back with a vengeance. I am about to start the 3rd scan, and have done an MG tools log.

Infections like this can be quite damaging to a PC and can sometime result in the only reliable fix being a total reinstall. Right now your MGlogs file is looking much better than previously but I have a few things for you to do. If you have already started the next Eset scan, then just let it finish to be sure it finds nothing. Then move on to the below.

First delete the version of ComboFix that you already have on your Desktop.
Now download the current version from the below link and save it to your Desktop.

    combofix.exe

    Now uninstall the below programs:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 14
    McAfee Security Scan Plus

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Ok, some progress. After the 3rd ESET scan, nothing was found. When I reenabled Symantec, the Auto-protect wasn't going berserk either. My computer seems to be stabilizing...

I've uninstalled McAfee's scan and updated the Java Runtime. I've also done scans with Combofix and Mgtools, as requested.

Not according to the logs you just attached. Did you not follow my instructions in the order written? Exactly when did you uninstall it? If you uninstalled after getting the new MGtools log, you will have to run MGtools again and attach a new log so I can see the proper status.

Overall your logs look good except for McAfee and perhaps two minor leftovers to cleanup.

I definitely got rid of it, I might have done it slightly out of sync. I've attached new logs.

McAfee is gone now. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
