I have been trying to download a certain cleaning file from Majorgeeks.com called CCleaner. I am using Windows ME, IE 6, Earthlink TA2004. I just recently upgraded to Earthlink TA2004, and had to learn how to adjust the IE proxy server settings. I have done the following things:
IE proxy server settings are off
    Earthlink Accelerator is off
    Parental protection is off
    Popup blocker is off
After checking the FAQ page, I turned off Norton Anti-virus, hoping that would help.
When I try to download this particular file, I come to the page that says "file will download in 5 seconds. If not click here. If I click there, it's like a flash of lightning comes through. The color indicator telling how much of the page has been received zips through, and at the bottom left had corner of the screen it says "done". There are no error messages. I even tried to download this file with DAP, and got the message that the file was really a HTML file, and to download it directly from the server. When I tried that, I got the same results as before. There is nothing on DAP to indicate that the file even downloaded. There is nothing on the screen to indicate that the file has even downloaded, or is presently downloading at the moment. Any suggestions? Thanks :) debm

    debm,
Are you using a firewall? If so, which one? Norton Antivirus should have very little to do with this really.

For starters, go up to your toolbar and click "Tools/Internet Options/Privacy and make sure these settings are set to "Default." Then click on the "Security" tab and make sure those settings are set to "Default" as well. Close Internet Explorer & re-open it. Now, when you get to the Major Geeks Download page that says "File will download in 5 seconds," if the file does not automatically download, use the right-click on your mouse, click on "Click here if it does not..." and save the file to a location in which you can easily find it.

I have to recommend a few programs if you do not have them already. SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware, and Spybot Search & Destroy (all free!) would probably do wonders for your ability for download files.

Post back & let us know what happens.

I would just try again today and if one of the 3 download locations doesnt work, try one of the others.

yep as Gina said post back and then we can think of another way to get that program to you....

True, I didn't even think about that Halo. I've had to switch download locations on certain files.

debm, Beware of DAP. The only time I tried to use it, it loaded 130 instances of spyware/adware onto my PC. Even in MG it is listed as adware. I use Leechget http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1821

Voted best downloader by a magazine I trust, here in OZ. No sneaky things hidden in it. Works without human intervention :) .

Load PestPatrol as well. Search MG for that link. I don't have it listed in my records, for some reason. Bazza

Thanks to all of you who responded. I'm sorry to be so late in getting back with you. First of all, I did everything that Gina had suggested. All my settings are on default. I even went to Microsoft and downloaded the latest updates for IE 6, thinking that would help. Also, to the person who asked, I don't have a firewall. I did contact the person who developed the program in the first place. He updated his website, and I tried again to re-download the program, but it didn't work. I tried again to download from Majorgeeks again tonight, but no luck. I'm getting to the page that says "Your download will begin in 5 seconds..." I can see at the bottom of the screen where IE is trying to access the download page. The little bar just flashes by. And then the bottom of the screen says, "Done". If I right-click the link that says "if your download doesn't begin in 5 seconds, click here", I have no options on the drop-down menu to save the file to somewhere else. I've never had this happen before. I've always been able to download these .html files directly from the browser. I've even set my proxy servers off. Should I enable them? Someone please let me know what you think. Thanks, Debm

    What OS are you using?

You turned off Norton AV, but do you have Norton Internet Security, which is a firewall?

    Alanc,
I don't have Norton Internet Security. The OS is Windows ME. However, I read on another post where someone else was having problems with IE 6, and they downloaded Netscape, and had a lot of success with it. So, I sat up all night last night fighting with this thing, and finally downloaded Netscape 7.1. I just installed it, and was able to download CCleaner from this site. I am so happy! I don't know why IE didn't work, but I am sure happy with the way Netscape handled the download. Hopefully, I won't have any more problems, but if I do, I know where to come. Thanks to all of you!

    Good for you, deb :)

You're better off with Netscape from a security standpoint anyways.

Hey, just wanted you to know I ran CCleaner, and it cleaned up 49 mb on my hard drive. I knew it was bad, but I didn't know it was that bad! Anyway, I am really pleased with the results. Thought you guys might like to know. It's a great product (in spite of the name!)

    deb, Check out

    Cleanup! http://www.stevengould.org/ Freeware 3.1
    and
    EmpTemp http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1575

Run both in conjunction with CrapCleaner. Both are free, all 3 won't conflict with each other, and each DOES find stuff that the others miss. Don't know why they do find stuff that the others miss but they DO. I run all 3, daily, religously, after every session on the net.

It might be a good time to do a DEFRAG as well. Bazza

PS: Use MG search box to find recommended Defraggers. baz
