Are you using Internet Explorer? If so, IEFix is supposed to remedy these symptoms:

Symptom 1: When you click a hyperlink in an e-mail message or on a Web page, or right-click a hyperlink on a Web page and then click Open in New Window, you may experience one or more of the following issues:

    *

    Nothing happens
    *

The new window may be blank
    *

You may receive a scripting error message

Symptom 2: When you use the Print command or the Print Preview command in Internet Explorer, nothing may happen.

Symptom 3: When you try to connect to Web folders, you may receive the following error message: "The current operation could not be completed because an unexpected error has occurred."

Symptom 4: Internet Explorer does not prompt for the default browser check even though the prompt is enabled in Internet Options.

Symptom 5: Internet Options Advanced tab is completely blank.

Symptom 6: Internet Explorer About box version information is completely blank.

Symptom 7: Address bar search does not work.

Symptom 8: Unable to type in text boxes in a search engine or website.

Would suggest you stay away from I.E. ..... too prone to attacks. Stick with Opera or Mozilla .....

Stranger and stranger .... put your xp cd in the drive, exit the setup screen and go to start/run and type "sfc /scannow" (without qoutes and note the space between the c /).
    Report back.

    Have you tried this?

    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type: regsvr32 urlmon.dll
    3. Click OK.

I have a similar problem and have a temporary fix, until I find something that works.

When I click on a site, the URL comes up in the normal place, a white screen appears, and the cursor changes to an hourglass as if it is searching for the URL, but nothing happens from there on.

My temporary solution is to copy the URL, by Ctrl-C, delete the URL, and paste the URL back into the now blank URL address column (Ctrl-V).

Yes, I kow, it is exactly the same URL, in exactly the same format and place, but it works for me. Go figure. Bazza

What proceedure did you use to reinstall? You shouldn't have lost anything with a repair install, other than updates.

Do you mean you booted up with the xp disc in the drive, choose (enter) to boot from CD, agreed to the license, then when it found the existing os, choose new installation , formatted the hard drive (wiping everything) and had a smooth (all files installed) installation?

You might want to reset your internet security to default and see if that helps.

I would like to get some more info on the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\intel3.dll file. Locate it using Windows Explorer and then right click on it and select Properties. Now see if there is a Version tab in the window. If so, select the Version tab and on the next window select each of the listed Item names (one at a time) to get more info about the file. The most important Item is the company name. If there is no Version tab, tell me that too.

Also goto the below site and use it to perform a scan on the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\intel3.dll file. Post the report of what it finds.

    http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Do you really want your start and search pages set to the below? Who did you buy this PC from?
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.freeserve.com/iesearch/default.htm
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.freeserve.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.freeserve.com/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Freeserve

Look in the registry and tell me if you find the following:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\xptptt]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_XPTPTT]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\xptptt]

You can download this for a free 15 day trial...fully functional:

To find these registry values, please do the following:

    1. Open the registry editor
    - Hit windows key + r (or click start --> run)
    - Type 'regedit' (without the quotes)
    - Hit enter (or click 'OK')
    2. In the left hand pane, expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hive

From there, it should be a snap, you simply have to expand each key until you find the values you're looking for.

Can you download the software from the link I gave you to rid the system of the virus/trojans? If you did a complete new installation of xp, and found trojans afterward, it's lo\ikely that some media (floppy, cd, etc) that you used has the bugs.

    hi
just finished scaning with counterspy its removed the stuff

not made a difference to the sites opening

is there a way to scan cd/floppys for virus/spyware i use 2 cds and a 2 floppy when i format

  41. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Depending on your antivirus software, if you right click on the cd or floppy drive with the media in the drive, you should have an option to scan for viruses. If your sure you have no spyware/virus left on the system, we can go back and start looking at the main issues.

  42. harris24982

    harris24982 Private First Class

ille have to give my cds/floppys a check before i use them again

all the scans are showing system clean of spyware/virus now

  43. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

OK, if all is clean, try running IEfix again ..... if still problems, copy and paste your settings under tools, advanced (especially the multimedia section - all of it should be checked except about the second or third from the bottom - i"ll have to double check it).

i ran the iefix but it could not find some needed files

it said it needed them from the xp disk but when i put it in it said they were not there

    files it needs

    iexplore.exe
    hmmapi.dll
    dhtmled.ocx
    triedit.dll
    html32.cnv
    msconv97.dll
    mswrd632.wpc
    mswrd832.cnv
    write32.wpc
    install.ins
    ieinfo5.ocx
    iefiles5.inf

  45. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

OK, so we're free of virus and spyware .... now unistall Internet Explorer (open my computer, double click on the c drive - if that's where it is - right click on the folder and choose delete- assuming you can't find it in add/remove programs) Then use your other browser ( you said you had Opera) and go to microsoft.com and download Internet Explorer from them.
You can also use CCleaner if it shows up under tools.

i did another format and install of xp then istalled a new thing each day to track the problem

the last thing i did was update windows and now its back to not connecting to the sites

Restore to before the last update .... or go to add/remove and uninstall last update ....then on auto updates, choose to download but let you decide which to install ....and obviously, don't install that one!! Gotta love MS .....(see my post :

i think it may be a combination of avg and windows update thats the problem

this time i did the windows update after the avg update thats when the problem started

lasttime i did the windows update then the avg and the problem started

is there a better free alternative to avg ?

  49. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

I'm reading your post to say that it doesn't matter which order you do it in .... it's always after the update ..... so if you do the restore/or uninstall the update, and all is working OK, turn off auto update and let it run for a few days to see if it stays good. AVG is very stable and not known to mess with any update issues.
