Vinnie Paul from Pantera. He works the double bass like I've never heard.

Always overlooked: Charlie Allen Smith from the Bob Seeger band. Hollywood Nights in particular or any of the live shows. The guy rocked.

Bonham was AWESOME, way ahead of his time. Neil Pert of RUSH is very good as well. At the moment I would have to put either the drummer from the DMB or Alex Van Halen. If you haven't heard VH on their new tour you should. Eddies playing varies from night to night. But Alex, omg. That guy is one of the biggest, baddest, tightest drummers on the planet. He never ceases to amaze me.

    Does 'fusion' count?
If so, Lenny White of "Return to Forever". In a class by himself. Any rock drummer (and I mean ANY) who thinks he a hotdog should listen to the "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy" CD. Then he will promptly STFU.

Doesn't anybody remember Gene Krupa anymore?

I think Bonham may be the most influential drummer of our time. He is required learning. However I have to agree with Blues --- Alex Van Halen may simple be the best I have ever seen, and maybe the most underrated. The guy is simply ridiculous in his talent.

This is the best drummer I have ever met personally. http://www.jeffsipe.org/

My personal favorite is Grohl… I like his raw aggression.

An yes – I remember Krupa – as a matter of fact I have a drum battle between he and Buddy Rich on vinyl… sick.

Keith Moon, or John Bonham. Also, Charlie Watts, though he was really a jazz drummer, and just did the rock-n-roll for the steady money! :p

No argument on Bonham and Pert, but more recently I always loved Tommy Lees style. Obviously you could argue that he is no Bonham I guess, but he is one of the few drummers you could put up front and be entertaining and that is half the battle.

In terms of pure skill, I'd go for Neil Pert. Mike Portnoy is up there with him, in my books, both of them innovating and skilled drummers.
Raymond Herrera is a pretty amazing drummer too, many people don't realise that all of the Fear Factory drum beats on the new album are totally real... no drum machines! He snares and double-bass'es like an absolute demon!! Totally AWESOME live.

  13. Deep Thought

    Deep Thought Private E-2

    John Bonham and Keith Moon.

I have a soft spot for Rick Allen too though... He only has one arm... And is a drummer. Awww.

My three are already mentioned Neil Pert is just amazingly gifted, John Bonham influential, but keith moon was incredible, ever watched the docu-movie the kids are allright, about the who, if you watch it Keith Moon never stops moving his hands, even during an interview, he is always moving, the early recordings trying to feature guitars and drums in thwe background never ever did him justice. Neil Pert on the otherhand changed Rush forever when he joined the band, just amazing.

Gene krupa or kruper was a pioneer well ahead of his time, he was the first I remember with a drum solo. He invented the modern drumkit the way he arranged it

I will disagree on Alex Van halen, I haven't seen him lately, but he just wasn't that great a drummer from his early days, He had the best equipment, just didn't know how to use it, haven't seen VH in a while, maybe he learned?

I i could only meet one it would have to be Neil Pert from Rush. I saw them in concert and he just dumbfounded me with his precise and emtremely effective abilities. Lets face it...the man knows every inch of his drums and uses them. Just amazing....

Or perhaps the music is more open to him and less eddie... Dunno. Last I saw him was 3rd row about 2 years ago and I was amazed.

Mike Portnoy from DT, the drummer from Fear Factory and also Casey Grillo from Kamelot.

  22. eclayton

    eclayton Sgt. Shorts-cough

Phil Ehart from Kansas, Stuart Copeland from The Police, and the aforementioned Bonham, Pert, Moon, Van Halen, and a guy named Joey Daub from a band called Believer, and now with a band called Fountain of Tears. Our friend Erik Ney plays bass in this band. Interesting stuff. http://www.crucifyd.com/believer/whatever/daub/

For me, a good drummer does more than just keep time. He makes choices. And the choices these guys make blow my mind. They communicate with their drums, they don't merely flail about to make as much noise as possible. Indeed, if the song calls for it, they will drop out and stop playing, a quality hard to find in any musician.

I also like a fellow named Tony Krogh. He plays a drum called a Bohdran in a band I'm in called the Crossing. But I guess that's a different genre! :D

You should get it, it is absolutely wonderful. "The Dance" is even better than the original songs, in my opinion. The video is probably the best concert video I've ever seen, though I haven't seen all that many. Well worth the investment.
