What a great resource! Hopefully you can help.

Two days ago I downloaded random files on my notebook to try and create a boot disk that would reset my Media Center XP Admin password as I was locked out.

I downloaded various ZIP, keygens and reboot programs until I was able to solve the problem on my HTPC (Sony VAIO XLII)

My computer is now slower and links inside Google are being redirected.

I worked through the "READ & RUN FIRST" directory however most programs would not open, run, install or scan.

My computer has Norton 360 - this shows all "green" and detects no problems. Windows defender found no problems either.

I have attached the various error messages.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Very very bad idea.

You need to attach the requested log from MGtools. This is the C:\MGlogs.zip file.

Please double-click the RootRepeal.exe previously downloaded.
    • Select File then Scan
    • On the Select Drives form select drive C by "ticking" the box for drive C and click OK
    • When the scan is complete - highlight each of the following file(s) (one at a time if more then one is listed) by left clicking it. Then use right mouse click and select the Wipe File option only for each file.
      • C:\Windows\System32\MSIVXcount
      • C:\Windows\System32\MSIVXeviieniuecmsjwqoxmjmojvfpqotambb.dll
      • C:\Windows\System32\MSIVXiqivvgtdvtelewoxiucbggfnqhlcdpsc.dll
      • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\MSIVXmipxrjgcvqqrrnemxehtaejfsdqkpxbi.sys
      • C:\Users\Alexander\AppData\Local\Temp\MPSampleSubmit\msivxiqivvgtdvtelewoxiucbggfnqhlcdpsc.dll.xor
      • C:\Users\Alexander\AppData\Local\Temp\MPSampleSubmit\msivxmipxrjgcvqqrrnemxehtaejfsdqkpxbi.sys.xor
    • After Wiping all files, immediately reboot your pc!
After reboot, download/install/update and run the scanning tools you couldn't run!

Attach the logs from the scans to your next reply.

Also re-run MGtools and be sure to attach the C:\MGlogs.zip file this time.

    Thanks!

That change allowed me to run the scans without any major issue. I can not fully convinced that MG ran right but I will attach the logs and we'll go from there.

I'm also not sure if things are back to normal, please let me know if there are additional procedures that I should do to have things running as well as they can be.

Thanks again for all of your help.

    You're welcome.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thank you so much for your help thus far Chas. I am very impressed that there are good people with these impressive skills that help strangers for free!

My computer appears to be working perfectly. I just want to complete the process so that I have an expert's opinion.

Please find the two files that you requested attached below.

    Thanks again.

You're welcome. Your logs are clean but we need to get the current version of Sun Java installed now.

Install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix and C:\QooBox folders from combofix (if it exists and note that you may need to substitute a different drive letter than C: if you have Windows installed on a different drive.)
      • Also delete the below two files that are left behind by ComboFix, some scanners falsely detect these as problems which they are not:
        • C:\WINDOWS\NirCmd.exe
        • C:\WINDOWS\PEV.exe
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
