Default Problem after installing office 2010

Hi guys,
I just purchased Office Prof 2010 and installed it this evening. However, when I tried to start one of the programs it came up with the dialog "This file does not have a program associated with it for perfoming this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

What does that mean? Why? What is the Set Associations control panel and how do I access it. I have not completed validation yet. Is that perhaps why? The software is a genuine copy that was sent to me from Microsoft.

No, it means whatever you tried to run does not know what to run. Typically this can be resolved by reinstalling the program which should reapply the correct settings. Let me know!

If a reinstall does not fix the problem, can you provide some additional information:
  • what is your Windows version? 32-bit or 64-bit?
  • did you install the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Office 2010?
  • how do you start the programs that fail; from a shortcut? can you check the properties of these shortcuts?
  • can you try to start the program(s) directly from the installation folder, e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE ?

Sorry I got back late.
No the reinstall did not fix the problem.
The specs are as follows:

* Vista 32 bit
* I did not get a choice of 32 or 64 bit ... it just automatically asked me to pick either the normal install or custom. I chose normal. (the word wasn't 'normal' but you know what I mean)
* I tried to start the program by double-clicking a file created in Publisher from a previous computer that has Office installed.
* I did try to open the program from the applications but it said the following:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations
control panel."

I don't know how to get to this Associations control panel.

This is a brand new software from Microsoft. Microsoft sent it to me so I know that it has never been used.

It is located under Default Programs in the Control Panel.

Find .doc or .docx and highlight it and click the Change Program button near the top right.

Well I got it sorted by a guy in India!!! Yeah I rang Microsoft support and he sorted out the problem right away. It was something to do with missing files and in particular something I guess in DOS, i.e. missing C++ language files. Yeah I know it sounds bizarre. We forget that Windows still sits on top of DOS. Anyway, even though my 2002 Office worked fine, the 2010 didn't. He must have had the problem before because he whizzed through my system like a dose of salts. I watched his every move through the channel created via Microsoft. He was very charming. I chatted with him throughout. He was surprised that Texas gets into the low 100s in summer. It's actually cooler in India. It's spring over there.. He says they pay him quite well. I guess you can live quite decently on 50c an hour in India. Over here you have to pay $40 to get them just to even take a look at it.
Thanks guys for your answers. If anyone else has a problem with new software you just bought then use the support system. Older problems you have to pay for though.
Pldr I think your solution would have worked also.

It would have been interesting to know what your charming Indian guy actually did...

Installing (and reinstalling) Office should have fixed any file associations and missing C++ runtime modules.

Well, let's just be glad that it is working now
