Sheeesh....wtf are you connecting with? Homeland Securities? ;) (yes that is good!)

    With your link I got:

    679 kbps download
    665 kbps upload

With the link I prefer to use: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

    922 kbps download
    667 kbps upload

Both were to servers in Seattle, WA. within 1 minute of each other.

I got 5027 / 1402 with speakeasy from the same Washington DC server so I guess both are fairly accurate. :)

Not all servers are equal. Using Speedtest's Kansas City server, I got 2407K down/272K up. Using Atlanta, which is further away, I got 2969K down, 282K up. 3 Meg ADSL connection, so Atlanta is right at full speed for me.

In the real world, download is more commonly limited by the server your downloading from. I VERY seldom see downloads anywhere near full speed.

IMHO for best test of download speed, hit up a newsgroup and download from there. Most newsgroups i have used can flood a connection if set right.

The premium newsgroups can. If you're accessing newsgroups through your ISP, you still at their mercy. I use the paid version of Forte Agent for newsgroup. Takes a bit of learning to get the most out of it, but it ROCKS for newsgroups, particularly for the alt.binaries groups with large multi-part downloads.

You probably have DSL connecting at a max of 1.5Mbps like me. Some of these guys have the 5Mbps option (and beyond), hence the nice high download speeds :)

Maybe that's the new special thing AT&T is doing. Supposed to be really fast, but I forgot what is was called. I wanted to get it but they said it wasn't available in my area yet.

When I double click my connection icon in my tray that's just my wireless card to my router, right? It says 24 Mbps right now.

Another thing, when I first start it. it starts at 54 Mbps, but then it gradually falls to 24 or even 18. Is that normal? Does anyone else's do that?

Thanks for the info calltaker and Lev.

Mine's DSL (ADSL actually, A=asyncronous; different downoad speed than upload speed, which is the most common.) My ISP offers different speeds for different $ amounts. Mine's 3 megabit. Check your plan and see what you're supposed to be getting.

That's pretty common. A high speed server will try to send at as high a speed as posslble (unless intentionally limited; and the limit may be higher than what you're capable of). If it senses packet loss, it will slow things down to what you can accept. I've seen some servers that start out slow and build up to whatever level as well. In both cases, they're looking to find what you're capable of receiving without wasting data packets.

Good thought. If you want to see who is connected, log into your router and check the connections. Also, make sure that you have all your security set on wireless so that no one can get in.

With a little haggling and whining and such, I got them to lock that in for a year!! I also got their phone service and premium cable (without the movie channels)...all for a grand total of $96.00 smackaroos a month!! I'd say I'm pretty proud of myself!!

On the books, though, it is marketed at roughly $45.00/month.
