Cannot double click on emails and icons, have to L click and open. Why???

The mouse/cursor is working, but is not working when double clicked. Nothing has really changed, except for some occasional cleaning, scanning, defrag. Kind of a pain to open things this way. And the one thing the curser still can do is open links with a click. Any ideas how to fix? Running XP home edition
