I have a Toshiba laptop and I think the keyboard is bad. When I press the spacebar the left bracket appears. That is just one example. ESC key displays a q. Replace the keyboard? Does not matter where the typing is occuring.

    Thanks.

? weird, might want to check your language/region settings, and make sure there's nothing amiss there.

Easy troubleshooting, first step, plug in an external keyboard and see how it reacts.
If it is the same as the laptop, we might be looking at a software problem. If the external behaves than we'll consider it a hardware problem (the laptop's keyboard).

The external keyboard works just fine and the language stuff is all good too. A replacement keyboard is on its way.
