I am using a network traffic monitor on my sidebar that I downloaded from the microsoft website and noticed bandwidth usage even when not using the computer at all so began looking into ways to check what is using it. I ran across netstat but really not sure how to use it. I'm running windows Vista with Firefox as my browser. I have no programs that use autoupdate or anything like that. Windows update service is turned off. With just firefox open connected to this site only this is what it came up with when running netstat -o.

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State PID
    TCP 98.247.191.112:50721 8.14.216.72:http ESTABLISHED 2200
    TCP 98.247.191.112:50736 a96-17-108-8:http ESTABLISHED 2200
    TCP 98.247.191.112:50737 a96-17-108-33:http ESTABLISHED 2200
    TCP 127.0.0.1:50567 Gilbadon-PC:50568 ESTABLISHED 2200
    TCP 127.0.0.1:50568 Gilbadon-PC:50567 ESTABLISHED 2200
    TCP 127.0.0.1:50569 Gilbadon-PC:50570 ESTABLISHED 2200
    TCP 127.0.0.1:50570 Gilbadon-PC:50569 ESTABLISHED 2200

About 1 minute after closing firefox I ran netstat -o again and it showed the following.

    Active Connections

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State PID

Not sure if it was normal to see a bit of background network usage when not actively connected to anything. I'm on a highspeed cable connection 50Mbps down/ 20 Mbps up. Average usage I'm seeing while not having anything open is 13 Kbit/s but can go up to 30 or so. This is showing as download usage under Refresh Ext. IP collumn. Under IP lookup column it's showing anywhere between 1.4-1.8 KB/s. There is no steady upload usage showing but it does sometimes show 380 bit/s under Refresh Ext. IP and 50 or so under IP lookup. I am not on a router or anything.

    Hi

These are from your ISP in Comcast if thats your ISP?

These are LAN or your PC likely connecting to router/modem.

All normal, even if you dont have an internet page open as broadband is perminent connection, unless you switch off modem/router or unplug ethernet cable.

Sorry for the delayed response, but thank you for your answer. Comcast is my ISP so looks great. Thanks again.
