Hey, I currently have an AMD Sempron 2500+ running at 1.75Ghz. This is with a fixed multiplyer of 10.5 and a FSB of 166Mhz. (This is all standard with no current OC) I can change the jumpers on my motherboard and set a FSB or either 133, 166 or 200 Mhz. By setting the FSB to 200Mhz I understand that I will then be running at an improved 2.1Ghz.

Now my question, I still have the stock heatsink+fan installed in my system and temps idle around 45C and hit 55C at max load. If I was to do this FSB change would my temps increase dramatically? Or would I just be within safe opperating temps?

Also by increasing the FSB I seem to recall that by doing this I am also altering the speeds of my memory and PCI/AGP slots. Is this anything to worry about as I have no cooling methods for either my 2 sticks of ram or my Gfx card which only has a small heatsink with no fan.

I believe my current memory sticks are:
    PC 2700 256MB
    PC 3200 265MB

Please ask if any aditional info is required. Cheers :D

i think that you should probably get a new heatsink if you want to oc. I recommend zalman... ummm... ocing rises temps so i would prob get a new heatsink and some artic silver 5... but i would also wait for ace to put in his opinion

Ok i need details. Stock voltage, max temperature@stock speed/voltage, stock FSB speed, what mobo you are running and what your max CPU V and Vdimm are. If the sempron you have is based on the Tbred core ( 256 L2 ) it should do over 2.2Ghz+ @ ~1.75 Vcore. Oh and did you read the overclocking guide ?

    Bobomoomin Specialist

Yep I sure did read your OCing guide and found it extremely useful if i may say so. Now then back to my problem. I'm not 100% sure on where to look for some of these details. My stock FSB is 166Mhz, Everest tells me that my motherboard is "MSI KM3M-V" however, when i google this it comes up with an indentical looking mb but it has at to 333Mhz FSB and mine is only 200Mhz max.

My sempron is indeed based on the thoroughbred-b core with 256 L2 cache. As for the voltages I'm not sure exactly how to find this information, I'm probably just looking in the wrong places, could you give me a point in the right direction please? :)

Update: I just checked in Everest again and found a couple of voltages, not sure if they help at all but here they are:

    Voltage Values
    CPU Core 1.57 V
    +3.3 V 3.22 V
    +5 V 5.08 V
    +12 V 11.73 V
    -12 V -12.69 V
    -5 V -5.20 V
    +5 V Standby 4.95 V
    VBAT Battery 3.30 V

    Your +12v is a bit low and stock for a Tbred is ~1.65V not the 1.57 you have. My old Tbred did 2Ghz @ 1.65v, 2.2 @ 1.7v, and 2.333 @ 1.75v. 200 in the bios is 400DDR ;)

Hmm I see, but back to my orininal question. If i set my FSB to 200Mhz what sort of temperatue increase will I be looking at?

    just a precaution,
i am using an AMD Athlon 2600+

when i jumped from 166mhz to 200mhz right away my whole comp failed, it wouldnt boot and i had to pull the system battery so it would reset my Bios,
i found that i had to gradualy increase in small increments untill i found a stable setting,

just giving you a warning :D

Extra heat comes form overvolting not overclocking alone (generaly). You most likely will not get 200FSB @ the 1.57 Vcore your running now...

  10. Bobomoomin

I see, so how exactly can I "Overvolt"? Ive got a feeling I may not be able to so this with my motherboard :( If I was to overvault what sort of temp increase will I have?

  11. ACE 256

ACE 256 MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Overclocking Expe

If your 15yo as your sig sais id hold off on overvolting or on overclocking in generel. no offince. List your full specs and i will see what i can do to get more speed out of it as safely as possable :)... You mainly play games on it i assume?

  12. Bobomoomin

    Bobomoomin Specialist

Hmm, well I do play games, but thats not what I do most. Most of the time I'm coding little applications etc.. I should be ok with overclcocking, althought I'm only 15 I know a fair bit about computers. I'll post my current specs:

    CPU - AMD Sempron 2500+, 1.75Ghz
    MB - MSI KM3M-V
    RAM 1 - PC 3200 256MB
    RAM 2 - PC 2700 265MB
    Gfx Card - Radeon 9250 256MB AGP
    HDD - Maxtor 200GB
    PSU - 400W

As if you require more info :)

    Well the core should to 2Ghz fine @ 1.65~1.75 v.... so 200 x 10 ....Is your chip locked ?

  14. Bobomoomin

    Bobomoomin Specialist

Yes im afraid it is :( Multiplyer is fixed at 10.5. I know I can get 2100Mhz if i set FSB to 200, but as you said, my system probably wouldn;t handle that on stock voltages :(

  15. ACE 256

ACE 256 MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Overclocking Expe

2.1Ghz should be fine @ 1.7~1.75v that is if you can change the core V....My Tbred is at 2.25 @ 1.8 V now....

There is what will limit you.

By being slower, it is pulling the PC3200 you have down to 2700 Speeds. Your 3200 is fine, and will likely reach a Speed of 215-220 with ease in BIOS. The 2700 will be lucky to reach 200.

For that reason, I'd say before Overclocking, either get yourself a new stick of PC3200 to replace the 2700, or accept the fact that you will be very limited in you OC until you do upgrade that 1 stick o'ram.

  17. ACE 256

ACE 256 MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Overclocking Expe

If you get errors @ 200 try running looser timings.. Most 2700 will do 3200 at stock timings ( though thay might need a bit of extra voltage ). What are your stock timings ???

    SPD Memory Modules
    DIMM1: Micron Tech. 8VDDT3264AG-335GB 256 MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM (2.5-3-3-7 @ 166 MHz) (2.0-3-3-6 @ 133 MHz)
    DIMM2: Micron Tech. 8VDDT3264AG-40BGB 256 MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM (3.0-3-3-8 @ 200 MHz) (2.5-3-3-7 @ 166 MHz) (2.0-2-2-6 @ 133 MHz)

Theres a few timings coppied straight from Everest. I'm still unsure exactly how to Overvolt the Core V :(

  19. ACE 256

ACE 256 MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Overclocking Expe

@ 200 run 3 3 3 8 stock on the 3200 and you have realy good odds that the 2700 will run that too.. as for uping the V core the vCPU is prolly under frequancy/voltage in the bios...

"manual" to get the timings and voltage options...

Update: I just checked BIOS and I can't seem to find where abouts I can change the VCore voltage. I can change the DRAM Clock, DRAM Timing, DRAM Burst Lenght and DRAM Command Rate but thats all I can find.

hmm... easiest thing you could do first is to tell us what type of BIOS you are running and what version. THen those of us with similar BIOS's could tell you where to scrounge around at.

Ok.... go to the right hand column of your BIOS. This is where a lot of what you need to pay attention to is at. There will likely be 1 or 2 menus there. One of them will let you set FSB/HTT and multipliers, and voltages. The other is likely for your RAM timings. If there is no RAM timings tab on the right, it will be on the left, in one of the 2 menus halfway down.

Hmm, This doesn't seem to match my BIOS at all to be honest :( Plus I can't change the FSB or Multiplyer in my bios. Is there nay other way of changingvoltages apart from in the bios?

Well.. I decided not to copy my entire BIOS because I actually have a life...

I have only copied down the 2 menus which have anything that may relate to this topic. (The ones In Itallic Are fixed and un-editable)

    Advanced Chipset Features
    - DRAM Clock/Drive Control
    Current FSB Frequency - 166Mhz
    DRAM Clock - By SPD
DRAM Timing - Auto By SPD

    DRAM Burst Length - 4
DRAM Command Rate - 2T Command
    - AGP & P&P Bridge Control

Ok Disable spread spectrum on all busses....
Set " DRAM Clock" to 166....
set " DRAM Timing" to manual or expert....
Are you running onboard video ??

  36. ACE 256

ACE 256 MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Overclocking Expe

How mutch system ram do you have ??
    Your running 512MB ram right
if so AGP Aperature Size to 128MB....
My rule of thumb is AGP Aperature Size = 25% of system ram.....

  37. Bobomoomin

    Bobomoomin Specialist

Update: Just done as you said and now all the DRAMClock/ Drive Control Section is fully editable :D Does this help at all?

Also shall I just keep my Aperature size as 128? Will changing to 256 Make much of a difference?

  38. ACE 256

ACE 256 MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Overclocking Expe

Do you have core voltage any ware ??
What settings are unlocked now ??

Hmm, I still can't seem to find Core voltage anywhere. The only place I can find it is in the "PC Health" Section of my bios but it's a monitor rather than something you can edit :p.. Any other ideas?

Edit: Oh hang on, I've forgotten to disable "Spread Spectrum" Like you suggestsed.. I'll do that now, Brb!

Heh, Well I'm thinking of just going for it and just seeing what switching to 200 FSB will do. Wish me luck ;)... Just hope the worst doesn't occur as I can't afford a new system!

Update: Well I went for it... but with no success :( I'm pretty sure that it can't handle the faster speed on the stock voltages. When I start up the system it all begins to load fine until about 2 - 3 seconds into loading windows xp and then then re-boots itself :( I think I saw the BSOD flash up for a flash aswell... Any idea on why it's doing this or how to fix it?

However It only happens when I'm loading xp. I can leave it running on the bios for ages.. This has confused me slightly:eek:

Ok, I've managed to change the DRAM Clock to 200Mhz and everything seems to be stable, will there be any noticeable difference from the 166Mhz it was originally? Also, is there any chance of memory overheat?
