    Hi

I've had some problems for a time with random crashes and BSOD. I tried some of the free Anti Virus programs, and some of they show something, and some don't. I would guess at a malware causing it, but I can't be sure. The frequency of BSOD is almost daily.

I ran all the steps of the read me thread, and the only real obstacle was the ComboFix which crashes to BSOD every time. The MalwareBytes seemed to find something, but removed it as far as I could see.

I attached the 3 logs that I have.

Any help would be really appriciated! I have spent hours upon hours on this stuff now...

    Thanks in advance.
    Fingon.

... And Windows can't update because it detects that the computer is infected...

Please do the below so that we can boot to System Recovery Options to run a scan.

For x32 (x86) bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
    • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account an click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
    • Select Command Prompt
    • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
    • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
    • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
    • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
    • The tool will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this file to your next reply. (See: How to attach)

Download this >> View attachment fixlist.txt

Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.
    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST64.exe on your flash drive.
Now reboot back into the System Recovery Options as you did previously.
Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).
Please attach this to your next message. (See how to attach)

Now boot into normal Windows can continue with the below.

See if you can run ComboFix now.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt log if ComboFix ran this time
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

  6. Fingon

    Fingon Private E-2

    Ok.

But the ComboFix still causes BSOD.

I skipped the step and continued with your instructions.

    Fixlog and MGlog attached.

Okay it seems that FRST was not really able to remove the C:\Windows\svchost.exe file that it said it removed. Something else must be hiding.

Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
    • Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller
Now please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon [IMG]
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Now please download OTL by OldTimer.
    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the OTL icon on your desktop. (If running Vista or Win7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    • Check the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
    • Check the "Standard Output".
    • Change the setting of "Drivers" and "Services" to "All"
    • Copy the text in the code box below and paste it into the Customs Scans/Fixes text-field.
      Code:
      netsvcs
      /md5start
      afd.sys
      atapi.sys
      csrss.exe
      dhcpcsvc.dll
      explorer.exe
      lsass.exe
      nsiproxy.sys
      regedit.exe
      services.exe
      svchost.exe
      tcpip.sys
      tdx.sys
      userinit.exe
      winlogon.exe
      /md5stop
      %systemdrive%\*.*
      %systemdrive%\MGtools\*.*
      %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
      %systemroot%\system32\*.sys /90
      %systemroot%\system32\*.exe /lockedfiles
      %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
      %windir%\assembly\GAC\*.ini
      %windir%\assembly\GAC_MSIL\*.ini
      %windir%\assembly\gac_32\*.ini
      %windir%\assembly\gac_64\*.ini
      %windir%\assembly\temp\*.ini
      %windir%\assembly\tmp\u /s
      %allusersprofile%\application data\*.exe
      hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\dhcp
      hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\afd
      hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\tdx
      hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\tcpip
      hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\nsiproxy
      hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
      hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\runonce

    • Now click the Run Scan button.
    • Two reports will be created:
      • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
      • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
    • Attach both OTL.txt and Extras.txt to your next message. (See how to attach)

    Ok, let's see.

The TDSSKiller found 3 minor stuff and one real finding. I chose "fix" as the instruction says. It looked promising. You can probably see it from the log.

    MBRcheck went smoothly.

OTL took a while, but was successfully completed.

    All 4 logs attached.

Okay I suggest that you rerun TDSSkiller one more time just to make sure none of the below type infections still appear
    Attach the new log!

Also tell me if you are still having problems.

    Hi again.

I had 3 suspicious objects where the default action is SKIP, which I didn't change.

No problems, it seems to be doing what it is supposed to do. Haven't tried to start the ComboFix again though, or try to provoce the BSOD in any way.

Normally, it happens after maybe an hour or two, but now I turn off the computer every day after posting today's post.

Want me to try the ComboFix and see if it can be defined as cured?

    Windows is updating again btw.

But I'll hold the champaign until you give the green light :)

Wow, ComboFix ran without any difficulty! It asked for a update which I said no to, and it had to start in "reduced functionality mode".

It looked like it remove the hostsvd-file or what it's name.

    Tadaaa, Combofix-log attached :)

    Am I cleared?

The below ones need to be deleted
    Code:
    07:57:30.0782 5168 \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - skipped by user
    07:57:30.0782 5168 \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - User select action: Skip
So run it again and Delete these or Quarantine ( preferably delete ) but use what ever choice TDSSKiller allows other than skip. ;) The others were fine to skip but not these. TDSS is an infection.

After deleting the above with TDSSkiller, reboot immediately and after reboot, run a new scan and attach the new log. We want to make sure they are really gone.

Then delete your copy of ComboFix.exe and download and use a new version. combofix.exe

Run it and attach the new log.

    Hi again.

TDSSkiller ran and deleted the line you said. After the reboot, it didn't find anything else than the two lines to skip.

I deleted ComboFix and downloaded it again. I still got the same message telling me to update it. This time I accepted, and it seemed to update to latest version.

The first scan was sort of aborted due to empty battery, but I ran it again successfully.

    See logs attached.

    You're logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
