It might be but I dunno what command to use, and then if I do know what command to use, it takes me to the little black screen and I'm clueless as to what to do from there, can you help?

i downloaded a video and it won't open, it says "use web or browse programs to open" or whatever. It is an Avi file and had something called "Windows Shell Commor (Common?)" with the little paper emblem as the open program. I changed it to Winrar so now it's Winrar but it doesn't give me an option to extract.

If the file is an avi file, open the player you normally use to play avi files. Click on file (in the player), then open and browse to the avi you want to view.

Ok, I am just jumping in here, because this is the closest to what my siutation is. I friend was trying to insert a pic into a Word doc., and Word kicked her out. We found the document recovered, but it was now an .asd file. When I tired to open it, it asked for a program to open it with. The properties of the file said that Windown Shell Commor could open it. I googled that and it is all very confusing. Is there a specific shell file that will open .asd files? I found one website that had a free commor download, but all it did was scan for problems, then said that to clean the errors, it cost. Any ideas?

For the .asd problem ("when files are renamed" section): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/107686

For the .avi video problem, seems like defaults are corrupted:
control panel>programs>default programs>set your default programs
    click windows media player
    set this program as default
