I have a problem with a Rogue Anti-Virus Program on another computer called Vista Anti-Spyware. I have been trying to follow the steps in the malware removal guide but I cant run ANY of the programs. Malwarebytes was already installed on the computer but when I run that the Vista Anti-Virus window pops up instead. I have tried renaming the files but they will not open I get an error message that says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path , or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I tried looking into all of the other thread mentioning this error and none of them have been able to help. I also tried a system restore and running the programs in safe mode. Also, internet explorer is the only web browser installed on the computer and it keeps blocking any page I visit as well as not allowing me to download anything. I'm stumped :( is there anything I can do? Thank you!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif
Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then double click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Now download and Run exeHelper
    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
    • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Then try running these instructions: Using MGtools

Attach the below logs when finished with all of the above:
    • C:\avplog.txt - from AVPfind
    • log.txt - from exeHelper
    • C:\MGlogs.zip - from MGtools
The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you boot from another drive, then use the correct drive letter above.

Ok, I couldn't get Rkill to run even when i selected Run as administrator. I found a way around it by creating a new user account and was able to run everything that you told me too. I hope that is okay. logs:

No, we need to use the affected account. Try this. (Not on the new account but the original account you are having trouble running things on)

Download the below file to your Desktop. Once saved on your Desktop, Right click on it and select Install

    EXEfix

Now are you able to follow my last set of instructions in post # 3?

Copy the text that you see into notepad. Save this as fix.inf to your Desktop (remember to select Save as file type: All files in Notepad.)

MAKE SURE UAC is disabled before continuing!!

Right click and select install > and reboot the computer.
Now try again for my steps in post #3.

Re: Rogue Anti-Spyware -Error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or fi

Ok after that I was able to right click and install it. Unfortunately, it didnt do anything, it will not open any of the RKill I still get the same error "Windows cannot find the specified device, path or file...etc". Although Rkill.pif I was not able to download because it said the file was not found :(

Download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Now try to run the scans on the other user account.

Re: Rogue Anti-Spyware -Error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or fi

Ok I ran those two. I ran SuperAntiSpyware on the one account last night to see if that would clear up the problem on the other account. Thats probably why avenger didnt find some of the files, I'm sorry I won't run anything else.

Re: Rogue Anti-Spyware -Error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or fi

Please switch to the problem user account and try doing this:

Please click Start, All Program, Accessories and you will see ( among other things ) a Command Prompt entry.

    • Right click the Command Prompt entry and select Run As Administrator.
      • It is critical that you run it this way.
    • If you do this properly, a command prompt window will open with a title of Administrator Command Prompt.
    • Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple/brown is merely informational.

cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
GetRunKey<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
ShowNew<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

I got the files to work now, I had to go to the file properties and hit unblock. I'm not sure why they were blocked I dont remember seeing that before when I was looking through the properties. Ill follow the directions in Kestrel13!'s post and post the logs.

Re: Rogue Anti-Spyware -Error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or fi

I am not seeing much of anything in your logs. You can do this:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Then use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Users\kevin\AppData\Local\3130882944
    C:\Users\kevin\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\3130882944

Now tell me what malware issues you are still having, if any.
