Windows XP logging on and logging off loop problem

Discussion in 'Software' started by NEWTOSATANEEDHELPWITHSATA, Jun 23, 2010.

  1. Whenever I start up now after turning it on or restarting my computer I am in an endless loop of entering the password at the password prompt and then it logs on/in and then it immediately logs it off and does this over and over again in a neverending loop. I just installed SP2 and I did a scan and quarantine with Avira antivirus and I believe that might be the problem. Problem is I can't log in in Safe Mode either and don't know what to do. Please help me anyone!

What is your computer make and model? We'll have to see if we can get you to the recovery partition, or you could boot from a recovery disk.

If the latter, you would first have to enter the BIOS to set your machine to boot first from a CD/DVD.

But with your make and model, people here can be more specific as to what to do.

  3. Does that mean stuff will get deleted? Like starting over, re-installing Windows or no? I have some stuff on there that I am not sure if I can get off or not as it is on the Desktop and I do not want to lose it and stuff on the Desktop of a HD when slaved (at least in one of my recent experiences in doing so) will say Access Denied and won't let me get the stuff off the desktop even when slaved.

But to give you what you need it is a Dell Dimension 2400. Did you need any other informaton? I am pretty sure I do not have a recovery partition or a recovery disk, just the Windows XP disc.

I'm finding different "information" on this machine, but I believe if you hold down the Ctrl key and tap F11 while booting, you'll come to a recovery console.

You should be given different options, though this varies. May have a Last know good configuration or repair options. These would both save your data.

Don't select format, this would erase your date.

Sure would be nice if this were standardized across ALL machines.

  5. That does not appear to do anything but just continue to boot up as it would if you were not pressing any keys. I tried twice. Is there a way to disable the Windows Log On password at all? Not sure if that would help at all. But is there anything else at all you or anyone else might know what to do?

Bypassing the log on wouldn't help.

The machine apparently does not have a restore partition.

Do you have a install or recovery disk? You would need to first access the BIOS and make Boot from CD/DVD first choice. BIOS can be accessed by tapping F2 on boot, or if that doesn't work, tapping the Del key.

  7. I have actually booted up with the WINDOWS XP CD, just sitting in the command prompt in the recovery console reading a bunch of research I am doing with google and cannot really find a sure thing to do.

Is it the CD from Dell?

Are you given any options to repair?

Both Install and Restore options would remove your data.

It is possible that an option to repair isn't there, just had one like that, can't recall if it was a Dell, (and this was only last Thursday, :-o ). A format/reinstall was my only option.

    If that data is critical you would have to remove the HD and copy it with another computer. The easiest way to do this is with a SATA/IDE to USB adapter;

  9. Yes the CD came when I bought the DELL PC. Also I am not sure if there are options to repair. I will shut down and do this again and see. I thought going to the command prompt I am at now C:\WINDOWS might help me some how as someone said try going to SYSTEM32 but that folder is not there. I know I am able to slave the HD in an enclosure and get the data off but that may pop up another problem I had on my other HD when I slaved it, I could not access (Access Denied) my Documents and Settings folder to pull the data out of there. If I could do that then sure I would probably just format it but I really need that data in Documents and Settings.

I think you were looking in the wrong spot.

Your personal data should be under your user name, confusing, I know. The Documents and Settings in the root, C;\, is something else.

Oops, I'm thinking VISTA, not sure if this is true with XP, my bad.

    Anybody on this?

  11. I mean I have stuffed on the Desktop, you know, files. I have it in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop and I could not access that on my other HD that I slaved but I wonder if that same problem will happen with this HD as I have not tried that yet. I assume that it will but hope I can be wrong. But in the case that I am not wrong how can I access it when it is slaved as the other one told me access denied?

Try right clicking on it and see it there are some security/sharing/property settings you can change.

I'm on a Vista machine so I can't be certain of what changes you can/should make.

Right clicking on it may also allow you to copy, even if it is denying access.

  13. I was unable to drag, copy any of that. Always with the access denied.

there's a easy way to get out your files.

Just download Hiren's Boot CD, start "Mini Windows XP" enter to the folders, save your files (just copy do not move anything or you will cause problems).

It also have an option to change the administrator password, is an app called "Locker" in the start > programs menu, you could change the admin pass and log in Safe Mode after save your files.

Good luck, tell us if was usefull. (and why you can't logon in safe mode?)

  15. I have a Hiren's Boot CD from around 2006/7. I wonder if it has the Mini XP you spoke of? Or Locker? I will check it. If it does not I would have to download a newer version of it and burn it to a CDR is that right? Can you help more with how the Mini XP thing works? This program shows "My Computer" files and the Documents and Settings and all my data on the Desktop?

I don't think the problem is changing the password. I figured that the problem is that this Avira has quarantined files like explorer and other system files that were infected with the Win32/Virut I found out by research. It won't let me log on in safe mode because it does the same exact thing.

Hi, it would be a nice idea to make a new thread for your requirement.

    Well, let's talk about that.

First, the most important before take a decision with reinstall or clean your malware/virus, is backup the data.

So i recommend the next steps for your case:

    A) Use a newer version of Hiren's. Use the option "Mini Windows XP", it will be open a version of XP "limited" and you can navigate through the files and folder like you were in a real XP. In order of that you could use an HDD or USB to backup the files "and just copy do not move or delete anything".

B)You could connect your hard drive to other computer but is not a good idea if you have that kind of virus, if you have a friend with Linux would be very usefull but i guess you haven't.

C)After you have saved it all suscefully, i recommend start to fight againt your malware / virus, so, if the O.S is restarting anytime you login, you have to perform a scan out of windows. Hiren's Boot CD have also some D.O.S utilities to scan virus including Hijack.

With the thing about viruses, you could make a new thread in the forum section

For the XP Logon/Logoff Loop, have a look at this post:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=1358023&postcount=6
and use the link provided there to Dan Fischbach's fix for the Logon/Logoff Loop. (The website has been remodelled recently, but the link in that post will redirect you to the new website, namely http://saveme.danfischbach.com/ ) Have patience and work your way through the instructions.

Virut/Vitro is a serious infection: It may well be best to retrieve your personal files (carefully), wipe the hard drive and start again. Your call on that one!

  20. I got Hiren's 10.5 now do I just burn the single .iso file with Nero in the Make Bootable CD option and that is it and then I go use this CD in my desktop to try and fix my problem?

*** Please print these instructions if necessary ***

    1. Download Hiren's BootCD (latest version 10.5) to the desktop of a working computer.
    2. Extract the zipped HirensBootCD.zip to your desktop.
    3. Open the extracted HirensBootCD folder.
    4. Double click the BurnToCD.cmd bat file contained in the HirensBootCD folder. This will launch BurnCDCC.
    5. Insert a blank CD in your drive.
    6. Press Start. This will burn the image to disc.
    7. Restart your sick computer and boot from the HBCD you created.
      • If your PC is not booting from the CD, you need to change the boot order:
        • Restart your PC.
        • As soon as you get an image, press the Setup key. This is usually DEL, F2, F10, or F12. On some machines the key can be a different one. It should, however, be stated on the screen which key is the setup key.
        • Once you enter the computer's BIOS, use the arrow keys and tab key to move between elements. Press <ENTER> to select an item to change.
        • Navigate to the tab, where you can set the boot order. It should be called Boot or Boot order.
        • The tab should now show your current boot order.
        • If the CD-drive is not at the top, please navigate to the CD-Rom drive with the keys arrows. Then move it to the top of the list. The keys for switching boot position are usually + to move up and - to move down. However they can be different, but they should be stated in the "Help", so that you can find them easily.
        • Once the CD-drive is on top of the boot order, navigate to Exit and select Exit saving changes.
      • Your PC should now boot from your CD.
    8. Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
    9. When the CD boots choose "Start MiniWindowsXP". Allow Windows to load. You will see a typical Windows Desktop.
You will be able to access your sick drive and save files/folders from here.

Just a note to say that if you have a true Virut infection, you will never be sure that you have replaced all infected system files. It would be your best alternative to save your data and personal files and do a reformat and clean install.

  23. Thank you everyone for your help. I solved this issue. I Hiren's it, I mini XP'd it, got my data, formatted, reinstalled and another problem reared its ugly head. Okay I was doing the updates and I was trying to update to SP2 and it seemed to be taking an awfully long time, 1+ hour of the same at half of the progression bar so I figured something had to of happened. Well I went to uninstall SP2 so I could reinstall it fresh and new but now I have a problem with like hesitation and lag, like something is missing at startup, it starts me up to the desktop but certain things take way too long to do. Should I do a repair or?
