Remote Access Connection Mananger - New Connection Manager - Windows Update errors!!!

    Hello,

    I fear I have a real @$%&er of a problem here....please help!
I am now running XP SP 1 (Home 2002) on a 3ghz Celeron with 512mb. (have uninstalled XP2 since these problems occurred)
    The problems I have are:

    1) When in a browser window, tools, internet options, connections, add - I can't add a new connection...the error I get is: Error 711: Cannot load the remote access connection manager service. A configuration error on this computer is preventing this connection.
When I try stopping /starting the Remote Access Connection Manager (and dependecies) I get the following error: Error 5: Access is denied. Could not start the RASCM service on Local computer. (I am logged in with full access rights)

    2) When I run the New Connection Wizard for a Network connection I cannot select the options I need which are; Connect using a dial up modem and Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password - they are 'dimmed'

    3) I cannot run windows update - i get the following error: [Error number: 0x8007007E]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.

Please believe me when i say i have searched for hours trying to find solutions to the problems and have run the solutions posted on microsoft's site to no avail i.e. deleting registry keys for RASMAN. I have tried restoring back to pre XP SP2 but even though i know i made a restore point i am told no changes have been made to my computer....eventually i just add/removed SP2
(microsoft suggest the problem can be solved by relaoding SP1...but SP1 came embedded and the workaround [the registry key bit i mentioned before] did nothing)
Is there some kind of XP SP1 fixer program I can run or somehow start from scratch without losing my data? I have no XP/restore etc disks? I fear the problems are too much to repair individually...?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

    Thanks

    P

I recommend that you run through the malware removal thread. This will establish a baseline upon which we can further troubleshoot your problem. (if one exists!) Worst case scenario is that at the end of it all, you will have an excellent, free, redunant defense against viruses and spyware.

    Thanks Mada_Mility,
I have followed your instrucions and run throuh the Malware removal thread.
Ccleaner, MWMSRT, Spybot found lots (and deleted), Windows Defender couldn't load and neither could Counterspy. CWShredder & Kill2me ran.
Then ran Bitdefender, Panda and Hijack-this - logs attached.
I am still experiencing the same problems however!
    ...please help if you can...!
    Thanks

    Hi There!

These are logs that you should be posting in the malware forum. Since you had some problems with some of the recommended apps, you should check with the experts in that forum to be sure that your system is clean.

You have several problems that need to be fixed. But first please empty your Norton Nprotect folder & your Norton AntiVirus Quarantine folder as requested in step 0 of the READ & RUN ME.

Also you should empty the below folder:
    C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton CleanSweep\Backup

Now let's start fixing the malware problems by running the below procedure:

    SpywareQuake & SpyFalcon Removal Procedure

After running it, attach the requested smitfiles.txt log and then attach a new HJT log.

    Hi Chaslang,

    Thanks for having a look...

I followed all your instructions - I found nothing and therefore deleted nothing. There were no problems or errors in following your instructions.

Attached are the 2 logs you requested.

    Thanks again,

    P

That's because SmitRem removed them before you got to the manual steps.

Why are you having WinMX load at startup? As far as I know WinMx is no longer even working. You should uninstall it and if the O4 line is still in your HJT log, the below steps will fix it.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1;tests
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinMX] C:\Program Files\WinMX\WinMX.exe -m
    O16 - DPF: {BDEE1959-AB6B-4745-A29B-F492861102CC} -
    O16 - DPF: {FF3F0F03-0F01-131A-A3F9-08F02B23E0CC} - http://207.226.177.98/gba2218.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.:
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Hi Chaslang,

OK, I followed your instructions - removed Winmx & deleted the entries.

Attached is my new HJT Log after a reboot.

Things appear to be working fine however I am still experiencing the same problems as in my original post....

    Thanks

Okay we have fixed your malware problems accept a couple things to delete. You initial message indicates issues that are not malware related. You will need to finish working on any remaining issues in the Software Forum but I will give you a couple of things to look at.

But first let's do a little more minor cleaning.

    Delete the below files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen Dixon\My Documents\WA6PInstall.exe
    c:\windows\pcconfig.dat
    c:\windows\VividGal.exe

Additional step to a file in the Downloaded Program Files folder :
    - Click Start, Run, and enter cmd in the box and click OK. This opens a command prompt windows.
    - Enter the following command lines each followed by the enter key
    cd C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\
    attrib -r -h -s UWA6P_0001_N822M1605NetInstaller.exe

    del UWA6P_0001_N822M1605NetInstaller.exe
    exit

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now take a look at the below if you have not already seen these:

    Hi Chaslang,

Thank-you very much for taking the time to help me rid the pc of malware - I really appreciate it. I have followed all your instructions...I even remembered step 1 of READ & RUN ME!! :)

I have also run through all of the suggestions on the 4 links you kindly provided - sadly they have not fixed the problem...I still can't add a new Internet Connection using 'Add a new Network Connection' or Wizard, can't start the Remote access Connection manager (or dependencies) or use windows update to get me anything newer than SP1.... :(

I will try the Software forums as you suggested.

    Thanks again Chaslang.
