I've noticed from NetMeter that lately I've been downloading up to 500MB worth of stuff just from idling on my computer with Firefox, mIRC, and MSN up.

So I closed down everything using a network connection except firefox (not loading anything at all) and look at NetMeter and see that it's steadily using about 0.2 KB/s and every once in a while (like 1 min), it jumps up 500 KB.

Scanning my computer doesn't show anything so is there a way to check what programs are using the internet?

    500 MB :eek
I used netlimiter free edition years ago. It gave stats of apps using bandwith.

    http://www.netlimiter.com/download.php (Don't think MG has a mirror)

Not sure if the free version still gives such a detailed report. I did download and run the installer to give you more info - but it has "Known compatibility issues" :p with Win7

You could try the Pro or Lite versions as they have a 28 day trial period.
Should catch the infringing app if any :-D

    Cheers...

    Are you using Vista?
If so you can view Network within the Resource Monitor to see what programs/services are accessing the net.
