First of all I have to tell you all that I have a post in networking thread (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=40103) for the same problem since I found that thread is quite similar to my problem,

I have got the same problem with my win2k pro. I have a small network with 2 win2k pros and one win98. everything was OK that each machine could access others share folders and print using one win2k.
later the other machines could not connect to "printer win2k" machine, but the "printer win2k" can see others ans access.
I have formatted the "printer win2k" and reinstalled OS (win2k pro) again. everything worked fine but yesterday the same problem occured again.
I checked the shares of the "printer win2k" using "NET SHARE". it doesnot show the IPC$, ADMIN$ or C$.
I add the IPC$ by invoking "NET SHARE IPC$". I got the IPC$ back. the other win2k now can access the "printer win2k" but win 98 is asking for the "\\print_win2k\\IPC$" password.
the username and password of the win98 is configured as a user in "printer win2k".
after about 2 minutes of invoking the "NET SHARE IPC$" the IPC$ share was again not there when I see it using "NET SHARE".

now I have created a batch file with line
"NET SHARE IPC$" and execute it every time my other win2k want to print or acccess "printer win2k" and mty win 98 continusly asking for IPC$ password....

Is there any virus or spyware available which does not allow the IPC$ to be up for more than a couple of minutes....

and of course all my machine connect to internet using different dial up connections.(different phone lines)

    I appreciate any help!!!!!!!!!

    1. Check the properties of your LAN connection. Be sure that File and Printer Sharing is installed an enabled.
    2. On the WINS tab of the 2k machines, make sure that "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" is checked. No longer sure if Win98 has this option or not... you may need to install the NWLink NetBIOS and IPX/SPX protocols on all machines.
    3. Be sure that the Guest account is enabled (and, IIRC, has a blank password). Win98 likes that. I think.
    4. Be sure that the Server service is running on the Win2k machine. Run "net start server".

In reality, the Win98 machine should be updated to Win2k. Patches and software are essentially unsuppoted now on Win98, and it should be avoided.
