I am trying to help my son get his laptop cleaned up. He has had a lot of issues in the past with viruses, unwanted programs, etc. Most recently he ended up with Trovi and before we had time to deal with it, he got something else that took over his browser and rendered it unusable. He did a clean install of the browser (Chrome), but was still having problems. Here is his description of the problem:

"I've been experiencing multiple crashes on web pages while browsing the internet, even when I had full bar connection to the internet, and I've attempted multiple reboots, virus scans, etc. Also I have reason to believe that an antivirus program I own called "avast! Free Antivirus is providing false messages that may have been implanted by a virus that wasn't eliminated by my number plus other scans. It continually asked me to remove "Bad add-ons" even though it was a freshly installed browser I was using. I thank you for your support to help me solve this problem."

I have run through the requested steps and am attaching the logs. Although I myself have not seen any problems in the day or so I have been working on this, it seems like the scans flagged a lot of issues. I know some of the files are ones my son created himself for his gaming and such, but I want to make sure we are clean.

Rogue killer did not automatically save a log to the desktop as listed in the instructions, so I manually saved that one.

I also encountered one error when running MGtools which said "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0x17a0 (6048), Thread id=0xb6c (2924). Click OK to terminate the application. Click CANCEL to debug the application." I hit OK in the pop-up shown, and it seemed to continue and finish normally.

    Snap.Do <<< Uninstall this garbage:

Re run Hitman Pro and have it remove everything it finds except for your game related stuff, Steam.exe etc...

    [IMG] Fix items using RogueKiller.

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7/8 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Registry tab and locate these detections:

    • [PUP] (X64) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{56561B2A-FB5D-363A-9631-4C03D6054209} -> Found
    • [PUP] (X64) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A717364F-69F3-3A24-ADD5-3901A57F880E} -> Found

Place a checkmark next to each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.

...and the same for this entry on the Task tab please...

    • [Suspicious.Path] \\4911 -- wscript.exe (C:\Users\Matthew\AppData\Local\Temp\launchie.vbs //B) -> Found
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Reboot the machine.

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    • Right-click OTM.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
    • Paste the following code under the [IMG] area. Do not include the word Code.

    Code:
    :Files
    C:\ProgramData\GLFOySrPuS
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\speed browser
    C:\Program Files (x86)\speed browser

    :reg
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{0BBEC52C-E030-462F-974C-F218C51D2853}]
    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large [IMG] button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into a text file to ATTACH into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

[IMG] Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running!

Thanks so much for your help.

We were unable to uninstall Snap.Do. There are two entries for it in the programs list - Snap.Do and Snap.Do Engine. The engine entry does nothing when you click uninstall. The other gives an error: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'LinkuryInstaller.msi' in the box below." The path in the box is a temp folder that no longer exists, and a search of the C drive for the msi file came up empty. We are not seeing any visible evidence of Snap.Do in the browser (Chrome).

We ran Hitman Pro and decided to let it go ahead and do the default action for everything it found.

When we ran RogueKiller the Registry entries you listed did not show up in the result, so we didn't check anything there. We did have it delete the wscript.exe in the Task section.

    OTM and JRT ran smoothly.

Got a similar error to last time with MGtools, just different numbers. Again hit OK and continued.

I'm going to reply again shortly with the log files, since it seems that the last attempt to uninstall Snap.Do hung something up, and I cannot get anything to open.

Try using Revo Uninstaller to remove snapdo. If it does not find it either, let me know, there's another way... :)

It seems that the only issue we are still having is that we are getting a warning from Avast. It pops up a screen warning about "Select Links App", then the next screen is says that we should remove "Google Search Protector" because it will interfere with the browser cleanup. We haven't let Avast try to remove it, because last time (before we started this thread) it ended up doing something funky to the browser, and he had to reinstall. Should we let Avast remove the Google Search Protector and the Select Links App, or is there a better way?

You can let it remove Select Links App however Google Search Protector is fine. Let me know how that goes.

So sorry for the delayed response. It's been a busy week! The Select Links App has been removed, and everything seems to be running fine. We are not seeing any additional problems. I assume we're ready for final steps?

    Excellent! :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
