Windows Update error / Win 2K Pro

My brother has been trying to update thru Windows Update on his Win 2K Pro system and has been having some issues getting thru on the site.

He recently updated to Win 2K and since has not been able to update since.

He continues to try these steps and hits a brick wall every time:

1st Notification Message:
UpdateFiles required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:
Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

Then:

Download and install the latest updating software
Registering: 100%...

And finally:

Error number: 0x8007041D
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view".


All of his IE settings are dead on where they need to be YET in "Services" when I had him check that the "Windows Update Services" & BITS settings were correct something seemed amiss when he told me the W.U.S was NOT started.

I had him try to start both and here's what he got:

"Could not start Automatic Update Services
Error 2147746310
An unexpected internal error was detected"

"Could not start BITS service on local computer
Error 1068 The dependency service or group failed to start"

This situation is beyond my knowledge so ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this first
a. Backup and then Delete Eventsystem from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventSystem
Reboot

b. Open a command prompt and CD to %windir%\system32.
Run the command
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

c. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
Double click the service "Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS)"
Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local
System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with
desktop" is unchecked.
Set startup type as mentioned & start services according to the sequence as
follows:
1. Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Auto
2. COM+ Event System
Manual
3. System Event Notification
Auto
4. Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions
Auto
5. Bits
Manual
6. Automatic updates
Auto

Start the services.
