Hi all, hope somebody can help with this one.
The PC that I am using as a server started being problematic some weeks ago when booting but now it won't boot at all.
When I turn it on it goes through and detects all my drives and then pauses for about 5 minutes before going on and detecting SCSI adaptors and SATA stuff. After that it gets to the screen where it list all the hard drives and PCI devices and the CPU and that is where it stops. It doesn't seem to want to boot from any device at all.
It's obviously a hardware thing but what? I did take it all to pieces the other night and reseat all the cables and cards but to no avail.
Any help on this would be appreciated because I use it as a mail server and webserver.
    Thanks
    Phil

You should probably start by running memetest86 on your memory from a boot floppy or cd and then get a hold of your hard drive(s) manufacturers diagnostic disks and run those too. If your sure everything is in order and it is clean so no overheating then look to memory or drive first and go from there.

Problem is I can't get it to boot anything so running anything from floppy is impossible. It just hangs right before trying to boot.

Might be your CPU. There might be a voltage problem for no reason. I'm just taking a stab because my computer didn't start when I put a new CPU into it.

Another thing might be RAM. I put 768MB into this computer but it wouldn't start. When I tested the RAM individually, it started. It also worked when I tested the different slots, but it seems that this computer does not support more than 512 MB of RAM, so the problem might be your RAM.

Try testing individual RAM sticks one at a time and see if it boots.

It appears that there may have been multiple problems with it. Stripped it down again last night and reseated everything including the CPU and it now goes through POST at a more sensible speed and does attempt to boot but it does appear as if there is a problem with a HDD somewhere as it just hangs if it tries to boot from it. Not had a chance to swap drives yet but when I do and if it cures the problem I'll let you know.

It is again working after changing the hard drive. I suspect that there may have been a problem with memory as it all worked after reseating it.
Strange but windows had never given any indication that there was any problems with the drive.
