Trojan horse in microsoft performance monitor

My AVG has been detecting repeated injections in C:\Programdata\microsoft\performance\monitor\temp\tmp{3 or 4 digit random hexadecimal}.exe and does not seem to be able to clean them. It has also claimed that C:\Programdata\microsoft\performance\monitor\PerformanceMonitor.dll and C:\Programdata\microsoft\performance\monitor\SecurityHelper.dll were infected but after running the MajorGeeks scans, these two seem to be clean now. I was getting intermittent network disconnects accompanied by some open webpages displaying a "privacy issue" in Chrome. Rarely, I was getting pages for 404 errors in some go.microsoft.com addresses that opened in my browser without my prompting it.

Scans were performed and the logs are attached. The Malware Bytes log was to big to upload and had to be zipped. Thanks for the help!

When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Reboot the machine.

Re run Hitman Pro, under the heading "Malware" you should let it fix these entries:

    • C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Performance\Monitor\temp\tmp1A1.exe
    • C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Performance\Monitor\temp\tmp71C4.exe
    • C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Performance\Monitor\temp\tmpFAB9.exe

Also let it remove everything under the heading Potential Unwanted Programs.

Re run Malware Bytes again and this time have it remove everything that it finds. Once done, re run it yet again, let it remove anything it may find and attach for me afterwards a hopefully clean log. :)

[IMG] Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Re run Hitman Pro (just a scan) and attach log.

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

I was able to follow instructions until running malwarebytes anti-malware. After running Hitman Pro it also found SecurityHelper.dll so I let it quarantine this as it recommended. After the Malwarebytes scan I selected all 3000+ found items and clicked the "fix selected" button. The program crashed so I ran it again, making sure other antivirus programs and browsers were not running but it crashed again. I uninstalled and then reinstalled Malwarebytes and ran through the same procedure but it crashed a third time.

Please let me know how to continue.

    Thanks!

I solved the Malwarebytes error by deleting the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Performance\Monitor\temp\ folder before running the scan. This limited the results to 100 entries versus 3,122 entries previously found and it was able to then fix the issues.

I am attaching the rest of the logs as requested.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Paste the following code under the [IMG] area. Do not include the word Code.
    Code:
    :Files
    C:\ProgramData\@system.temp
    C:\ProgramData\@system3.att
    C:\ProgramData\afnojbnbplnjpmikdnjjejaeneogfeho

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large [IMG] button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into a text file to ATTACH into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.
Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running!

My Pokki menu (start menu shell program) link now tells me that "The item 'HostAppService.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly. Do you want to delete this shortcut?"

Downloading OTM.exe to my desktop did not want to let me save it there without certain rights or permissions. After AVG Free moved it to their virus vault, I was able to restore it to my desktop and disable AVG until reboot which let me run it.

Re-enabling AVG caused Windows to ask me for authorization to use the program which it had never done before but gave me no issues after accepting AVG as a valid publisher. Scanning c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Performance\ folder using AVG, it did not detect any threats.

Attached are the logs you requested.

I'm pretty sure I never zapped anything pokki related. Does pokki still worl correctly?

    No more malware problems?

One Pokki entry was deleted by JRT (and two probable AVG entries by Malwarebytes) but I did as told in case they were disguised malware. Pokki menu is not currently running but I will just reinstall it.

Everything else appears to be functioning properly so far.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

Excellent :) I'm glad to hear it.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
