empty inbox outlook express

    Is there any free way to reclaim e-mails that have dissappeared from my inbox? I sent something to myself from internet explorer and when I checked to see if it arrived all my other e-mails had dissappered! Help in outlook had only $40.00 downloadable programs or using my own (nonexistantant) backups as suggestions. There was some important info. in with allot of junk, why would this happen? What is the best way to backup?
    Thanks, my old system is working with just a couple of freezes a day.
