 I am wanting to know (in plain english; step by step) how I go about doing a virus scan?
My hubby has done it for me a couple of times. He clicks on the the icon for avast & then does something else; but I don't know what. And then I reset my computer & when it restarts it does a virus scan in DOS mode (I am using Win XP) & it will go though everything that is on my computer.

I want to lean to do this myself as I think it is a very important part of keeping my computer virus & adware free.

My avast is 4.7 Home education. I have got the trail one but, am looking at buying it as it is so good.
Even though it is free I have seen my hubby do the scan & want to have a go myself.

I hope I can cover it for you,

To run a virus scan from Avast open Avast via the icon, a splash screen will show mentioning the programs version and it will do a quick scan of your memory/ram once that has finished you will be presented with a graphical program like below

Where the red arrow is click that icon it will turn of/off the scanning of the Hard Drives, you want it to say ON.

Next click the icon which resembles the play button on a Video/DVD/CD player as highlighted in the below picture, which will start the scanning of your Hard Drive and files ( will take some time to do )

as for the boot-time scan it would seem one has been scheduled, to remove that option click the highlighted icon below which will bring up a long menu, choose "schedule boot time scan" and when prompted choose cancel.

    Hope that helps some.

:) Thank You for the help.

I will just do the full scan; not the start up scan later on tonight; as in before I go to bed & hope that it dosen't come up with anything. Other wise I will have to carry it on tomorrow; while I dropping my son off at pre school.

I am glad that there are people around like you. And places around like this where us 'non-tech' people (when it comes to computers) can get help from you 'geeks'.
