A mate of mine came round this morning to take a hard drive out of a laptop and put it in a caddy. In the laptop, Ubuntu said it has multiple bad sectors (going into seven digits) but in my test machine (to which the caddy is connected) Ubuntu reports it as having just one. Do you know why this is?
When the disk was in the laptop, both the built in HP diagnostics and the Hitach Disk Test failed!

The drive could be re-mapping bad sectors.
In any event once a drive starts to fail, back it up and get a new one unless you can easily replace the data on it.

I agree with DOA. That drive is not to be trusted.
