There are several back up programs I use a program called acronis true image it will back up your entire hard drive and will restore it in case anything happens and it makes schedule backups on the days you want it too. You could get norton's ghost but i tried it and it leaves an icon running in your systems tray all the time and uses more resources than acronis. Overall acronis is alot easier to use than norton's ghost 9 in my opinion. There are some free backup progams on this site but i have not used any of them but for the $40 U.S dollars i spent on acronis it was well worth it.

There is a back-up utility in Windows XP - go to All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Back-up (you may have to install the Back-up program from the Windows XP system disk). I used it to back-up my whole hard drive onto an external hard disk drive, and it did the job fine.

Just wondering... what're some recommended ways to make a BOOTABLE full backup of a whole hard drive onto a new larger drive? Windows 2000 Pro?

Re: back up whole hard drive ... to DVD ???

Any recommended tool (s) ... or methods, or techniques ... for making bootable backups of a Windows 2000 Pro system and selected folders... onto a DVD +/- RW ???

Whole hard drive is not needed... just bootable system, apps, and selected folders... is there any cheap, easy way?

I need the same solution. Have tried the COPY command on Drive Image 2002 (for the first time), usually use the backup command, but cannot get iCOPY to work. Will keep trying, but other options would be nice. Can anyone help? Bazza

Tried GHOST ages ago, when I had 2 identical 10 gig drives on my laptop, GHOST couldn't figure out which was the source drive and which was the target drive. They've probably fixed that by now. Can't afford to buy a commercial program, at present. Bazza

Must dig GHOST out of my old software pile. I am trying to copy contents of 30 gig drive to 10 gig drive so it might work. Thanks for the jog to my memory. Must keep taking the tablets.:D Bazza

I've used Acronis and made bootable disks just fine..but that was with XP, I have no idea if it works for 2000.
I always have a backup on a bootable (just in case), and have had to use it...once.lol

You can't, contact Micro$$oft for a replacement, if I understand your question correctly.

BTW, this thread is pretty old.
