    Hi Tenaciousbro,

You can try vista's system restore feature to see if you can restore the system back to a date before the laptop was loaned out.

    1. boot the laptop.
    2. as soon as the F11 option screen goes by, press F8 repeatedly and then boot into safe mode.
    3. go to the start button/run and type in rstrui.exe and click ok. restore the system.

    1. if no go on the above, go back to safe mode.
    2. go to start button/all programs/recovery manager folder and execute recovery manager. re-attempt to restore the system back to its factory installation.

*all data on the hard drive will be lost using the method above.

    1. if no go on the above, go back to safe mode.
    2. go to start button/all programs/recovery manager folder and execute the Recovery Disc Creation option. attempt to create a set of 3 recovery disks. if successful, insert disk 1 in the drive, reboot the system and choose to boot from dvd-rom using the boot order option that is offered on the same screen that offers the F11 option.

*all data on the hard drive will be lost using the method above.

    * if you cant create the recovery disks, you can purchase a set from hp/compaq for around $15.00. they'll ship them to you pretty quick in about 3-5 business days.

When you see the screens start to come up on your monitor (while it is booting up) start pressing the f8 button at the top of your keyboard, once every two seconds until your computer asks if you want to go into safe mode. You may need to arrow down to select it.
