I just got done repairing a friend’s computer and used my copy of Windows XP pro to reload Windows. I tried to use Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to change it to his key and it keeps saying that I typed in an invalid key.

I've used Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder before with no problem, but time it just will not do it. I even tried the beta version of Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to no avail.

Is there any other program out there that can do this, or is there a manual way I can change it?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Very simple,

    Follow these steps.

    1. start-run- type "regedit"
    2. navigate to hkeylocalmachine\software\microsoft\windowsnt\currentversion\wpaevents

    3. Modify the OOBETimer hex value (just change any letter or delete any letter)

    4. exit the registry

5 go back to start-run and type in "C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a ( copy and paste this command )

6 The windows activation wizard should come up. Tell it you want a support tech to activate windows by telephone. Then click change product key.
Enter in new product key and click remind me later.

    7 restart

8 Go back to the command in step5. Now the activation wizard should say that windows is already activated.

    Thats it my friend.

    Superb walkthrough, Shmoe100.

Ctrl-A > copy > paste to notepad for future reference....

I tried it and it still will not accept his key. I talked to two MS tech's about it to no avail. They said it was a valid OEM key but they could not help me beyond that.

    Thank again

There is a difference between keys for Retail, OEM, Upgrade and VLK. An OEM key will not work with a RETAIL copy of XP, and so forth and so on.

It's a pity that piracy has made this cumbersome proceedure necessary.

You aren't kidding. I do a lot of recording/editing with my computer.
And I can tell you that some of the software that requires a dongle,
is scaring a LOT of customers away. Some of the copy protection horror
stories out there are amazing. I know of musicians that purchase the
product for the legit license and then download a hacked version to
eliminate the crashes that the copy protection is notorius for.

I guess thats my problem, I just need a program that will write over the key regardless of Retail, OEM or Upgrade. To bad EBCD dosn't have this feature.

It wont happen. You must have the correct type of key, for the version installed.

As puter said your peeing into the wind with this one, although each copy doesnt have its own key stamped on the disk,it does have oem or retail ,somewhere in the code lets windows know wether its an oem or retail code, you will have to find someone with an oem copy or purchase a license to use your retail copy

I have seen this problem before when a hardrive died and microsoft was phoned,"my harddrive has died and taken my copy of windows with it"

    Microsoft "tough"

In not so few words. :(

  12. I know that does make things a pain in the neck you know what i personally think would be the smart way for ms to end its piracy/ security holes and end the tedious licence key process... go open source like mac/ linux are. That way anyone can use the os doesnt matter if i buy it at the store or download it. That way everybody's happy.

Mac isn't open source. The point is, the original poster needs the correct key, or reinstall with the correct version and correct key.

If I got that response from M$ then i'd chalk it up to experience, but i'd make sure they knew what they could do with their products and then go over to linux.

  16. Oh my mistake adrenaline. By the way sorry bout the slow response i just switched over to that verizon yahoo thing and were still trying to figure this crazy thing out. But yeah but i think still if windows went open source it would solve alot of stupid problems theve been haveing. First of all they can do away with the PITA product key that we have to go crazy about, second it would not be worth elxploiting because everyones allowed to use the software, And alot of toher programmers can develop things to solve alot of the bugs that exist in windows.
