    Folding Tactics

Does anyone remember the ecc109 days, where we would organise group "dumps", to jump the team in front of us?

Well, I suggest we organise a similar course of action, of course with new tactics for the new (as it were) project. I'm sure that we could use similar tactics, if we had a crack team of "buffer" crunchers, we could work out how much we needed to jump the team in front, and dump simultaneously, while the rest of the users kept us going steady.

Any advances on the idea? Would it work?

Either way we need to be more active in our community, get some team spirit together :D

Well I volunteer to be one of the users to keep us steady,,
I'm on dialup so any chance of me doing ANYTHING simultainious is slim

It must have heard me, right as I was about to post this,
    I lost my connection

Actually, since you're on dialup, its probably easier for you to "buffer"... as opposed to just leaving it runniing permenantly.

    Hmm.. :D

Sounds like a good idea, though I am running F@H on 6 different comps in 3 different locs, so I am not around all of them at once. I could buffer with the two at home -- those are the fastest anyway.

Not positive but doesn't the score page update every 6hours? If that is the case wouldn't it be fairly easy to do a simultainious dump?-----I am a novice at best so this might be all wrong.

    Re: Folding Tactics

    Ok.

At the moment I'm trying to make some sort of private group or mailing list we can use to organise ourselves.

The drill will be somthing like this: We delegate a number of people (and a number of their machines) to be "buffers". They will tweak their settings so they can get big fat WUs. They do the work, complete it and start the next WU, but DON'T send it off. We organise a date/time, and each of the "buffers" dumps their WUs simultaneously, so we get a crapload of points in one go, which lets us leapfrog a number of other teams.

I think its a good tactic if we can get it to work, as we can easily beat a lot of the teams were next to on continuous, but it takes an age to do that.

I reckon with one dump, we can flame at least 5 teams permenantly... maybe 10 or so when the points first get credited.

    Anyway, we'll get y'all organised ;)

I thnk I better be a slow and steady. With my life as crazy as it is right now, I don't think I could coordinate it.

Thats cool :) We obviously need some consistant producers, since we have a 100 strong team (yay :D ), if we took too many out for buffering we'd lose our momentum completley.

I think 5 or 6 big producers with a bit of time to spare would give us enough kick to do the job ;)

if i know how to buffer the wu's then count me in but i cannot be sure that the wu's are transformed on the same date because the comps are on 4 different locations, 2 would not be a problem but the other 2 would.

Well, if you only use a couple of the machines to buffer, shouldn't be too much of a problem.

We'll have to see what we've got when we're all assembled.

Forgive me but I don't understand, if our team is producing 10,000 a day and we start holding back to dump all at once then the team were trying to catch is steady adding (right) and we're not because we're holding back. Then we make a dump which puts us right where we would have been had we not been holding back. X amount of points no matter when you send then is still x amount of points????

Not quite;) Strategies and competitions in the past have always brought in more crunchers so we have more crunchers in on the planned dumps. No kidding!:D People start adding the client to more computers at work, or hooking up old computers that are just collecting dust to run the client, etc...it's a riot with excellent results in the long run:)

The point is that we gain many points in a short space of time. Mathematically, it works, and it is possible to gain a greater lead by doing this.

Think of it like this. Two lines, which have an intercept at a certain point. If one of the lines has a smaller gradient, the intercept point becomes nearer, HOWEVER before they reach that point, the gradient increaces sharply, making the distance between the lines further. In the process, you have also jumped about 5 teams that were in front of you, and now you are well out of the way of competition.

The way we make the gradient increace sharply is by heavily optimising our machines, possibly to the extent we can't use them for anything else, and add to the power temporarily.

For example, I might be able to convince an IT techie at school to let me put F@H onto a room full of computers for a couple of days to do a WU each, but I would have to uninstall it afterwards.

Or, one rig per team member could be designated a caching rig (probably a slow one), which loads deadlineless WUs, which when called upon we can dump 2,000 points worth of WUs in one go.

The trick is not to hold back so much that your rate plumets, and to keep enough to dump to give you a considerable lead. Thats where my spreadsheet comes in ;)

Cool, but just so you know there's nothing for me to add.3 of my puters don't even have a case and I have to share cd roms :D But I have a blast trying to keep it all going
