If the drive is hosed then crack the case:
Look carefully along the joints for small openings, sometimes those are where you can insert a small flatblade screwdriver to start prying it apart. also take the same small screwdriver and start at some place on the case at the joints and see if you can pry one side away from the other to see where the tabs/catches are. You will have to explore to figure out your case. also on the bottom see if any labels there are covering screw holes - another trick they do. if you see a label that says this will void the warrenty if removed, that is a huge clue that label is covering a screw

I had an ipod that stopped working and made a clicking sound. When I took it in the guy told me that the hd was shot.

Hi, that clacking sound you are hearing is the arm slapping back against the magnets inside the drive as the heads fail to position correctly, you very likely have a dead drive I'm afraid.
Its probably the circuit board has died on the drive, if you are very lucky you might find a replacement, but you will have to look long and hard probably, there are companies who offer these boards, but they have to be an exact match, that is the same date of manufacture and also the same chips and firmware that was used on your board. It really comes down to what the data is you want back and how bad you want it.
Any company offering this service will repeat what I have said, some will offer a free evaluation. Google it up for your location.

    Happy hunting!!!

thelaptopguru, since this thread is over 7 years old, the OP either solved the problem or tossed the hd.

Yeah I realised that several hours later, what on earth was it doing in the list????

I also couldn't believe they didn't know what the clacking sound was and how much that hard drive had cost him hahah ahahahahahahahaha
Its Ok I'm awake now :-o

probably a spammer added to the thread; the spam was removed but the thread was still on an active page.
