A friend's Win 7 laptop will not boot.
It gets as far as asking for password and then BSOD.
Will start in safe mode alone but not with networks.

In safe mode it brings your attention to the crash and offers...

I have the dmp file but it is meaningless in Notepad and I can't attach it to this post.

Any thought as to what I should do to get the laptop back in working condition?

    Many thanks,

    s.

Thanks plodr win 7 disk (32bit) found by neighbour.
I ran it through to restore and eventually came up with a message saying that it couldn't fix the problem and gave me the choice of sending details of why?(recommended)
This I clicked followed by finish.
The laptop has not been fixed but somewhere (probably on the HD) is the info concerning what is wrong...

Any ideas as to what I should do?
    Many thanks,
    s.

So I brought the machine home and turned it on
2 choices. Repair (recommended) run normally
I went for run normally thinking that it would not boot up and then on restart I would get a safe mode choice BUT IT STARTED!!!

I am updating the MSE anti-virus and scanning.

What else should I do to keep her going?

    Thanks for being.

I'd probably run a sfc /scannow (perhaps that can find problems and fix them). I've seen posted that this might be needed to be run 3 times until things are fixed so don't get discouraged if it says it can't fix the problems. Run through it 2 other times. Even if it doesn't fix everything, it will not hurt the computer to run it.

Check to see how much free space on the hard drive. If it is less than 15% of the hard drive, ask the owner to help you clear things out. Perhaps by even moving documents off the computer.

You could also defrag, though 7 is pretty good about not getting fragmented. Again, it is one of those things that if it is done and not needed, it will not hurt the computer.

    Thank you plodr ,
The laptop seems to be working fine now. Last night spent a few hours running Ccleaner, Advanced SystemCare 8 Free 8.3.0.807, Glary Utilities 5.28 and a full defrag.
This morning, on your advice I ran sfc /scannow and on finishing it declared:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
(This means that you do not have any missing or corrupted system files.)

I think it is now as good as it can be...

Thank you for the help and I shall now mark this post as SOLVED.
    Best wishes to all.
