I'm looking for info on disabling Internet Explorer in XPpro w/SP2. I would like to avoid unistalling it if possible....really just want to disable it or deny access. I used to use a batch file to disable it....but since were useing SP2 now it doesn't work. Tried to just delete the executable.....but it gets replaced....file protection I guess.

This is the content of the batch file that doesn't work anymore:
    @echo off
    C:
    cd "\Program Files\Internet Explorer"
if not exist IEXPLORE.EXE goto End
    if exist IEXPLORE.EX_ del IEXPLORE.EX_
if not exist IEXPLORE.DIR md IEXPLORE.DIR
if not exist IEXPLORE.DIR goto End
    attrib -r -h -s IEXPLORE.EXE
    ren IEXPLORE.EXE IEXPLORE.EX_
    if exist IEXPLORE.EXE goto End
    ren IEXPLORE.DIR IEXPLORE.EXE
    echo IE disabled.
echo If prompted, click "Cancel" then "Yes" on File Protection restore.
echo Run enable-ie.bat to allow IE to run again.
    :End

Is there something in this file that could be edited to make it work post SP2?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Well, I'm thinking it would be cake to remove permissions on the IE directory, but I could see that causing problems. For example, if explorer.exe is used to access the net, I've no idea what would happen. Maybe nothing, maybe an error, maybe a complete crash.

You using XP Home or Pro?

    Another way is:

Set the browser you want to be the "default" browser.

Then in IE tools>options>programs, check the box for "IE should check if it's the default browser"

    That won't disable it, however.

Anyone who opens IE will still be able to use it.

    Disable Simple File Sharing.

    Go to My Computer>Tools>Folder Options.

Scroll down to enar the bottom. Disable Simple File Sharing.

Then locate the IE folder in Program Files.

    Right click, choose properties.

There will be a security tab. Have at it. At your own risk, of course.

Might want to switch permissions back whenever you update windows though.
