Hi this is only my second time posting here so I hope you will forgive any noob mistakes I make.
I am running a Dell Inspiron E1405 Laptop with Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2. It has an Intel T2300 CPU @ 1.66ghz/1.66Ghz and 1 gig RAM.
I have been having problems with a trojan that seems to be pretty popular. It is the ultimate defender thing that has been going around. I have all of the symptoms that everyone else seems to be having. I keep getting a button on my tool bar saying my comp is unprotected, If I click on my desktop a window that looks like MS security center shows up telling me that I should use ultimate deffender. My Desktop has not changed to the red screen yet but my backround has reset itself twice. I am also having trouble with IE It won't let me keep my homepage and it is constantly popping up with the error message that it needs to close If I do not click send I can browse but only somethings work. I have run all the steps in the read and run me first sticky and have also tried a few things from other peoples posts. Unfortunately Nothing seems to work not even SmitFraud. I only had trouble with 2 of the programs I could not get a report from AVG (I could not use counterspy) and I could not get Panda software scan to work because of issues with IE. I do have the latest Java and still could not get it to work. Here are my logs. I hope I did everything right and that you can help. Also I use McAfee for Virus and Firewall nothing else. I am seriously considering getting rid of it for something that actually works but have not yet made up my mind as to what my new virus detection and firewall will be.

The log you attached from SmitFraud fix is only from step 1 which is just a scan for problems. You need to run the fix which I will give below, but you have a load of other problems including Virtumonde, Winlogonhook, a Infostealer.Banker.C trojan (see http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2007-040208-5335-99&tabid=2 ) and a bunch of other trojans too.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Continue by downloading a tool we will need

    - Process Explorer

Extract it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    opnomnk.dll
    winopn32.dll
    pmnlj.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    opnomnk.dll
    winopn32.dll
    pmnlj.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    opnomnk.dll
    winopn32.dll
    pmnlj.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Now back at the main Process Explorer window look for the below processes and if found right click on them and select Kill Process.
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{5CCBDF4D-06C1-1033-0106-050602200002}\Update.exe
    C:\Program Files\Ipwindows\ipwins.exe

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winopn32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winopn32.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

You ran the wrong copy of HijackThis. Delete the below file:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Joshua\Desktop\analyse.exe

Only use the only like in your first post which was:

    C:\Comp Help\analyse.exe

But it would have been a much better idea to install it like we requested otherwise someday you will wonder what is this analyse.exe file. We suggested C:\Program Files\HijackThis\analyse.exe which is a little hard to mistake what it is.

We will get to our recommendations for protection when we finish. We have more to do.

First goto each of the below folders and delete everything in the folders. Windows will stop you from deleting a couple of files from the current day that are in use. You will just have to work around those to get all others deleted. For some reason ATF-Cleaner did not do it for you and it normally does unless the options are not properly set.

    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Joshua\Local Settings\Temp

Also two items from the HijackThis fix did not work properly. Either an infection is still present or your McAfee program blocked the fix.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CE067B95-BB9E-422D-B3F8-6E4CBFF3C8F4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnlj.dll (file missing)
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now reboot in normal mode

Now attach a new HJT log.

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
