I need to get info off computer with trashed WinXP. The only computer I have available is friends running Vista. Is this possible and if so how do I do it?

My goal is to remove data, do a clean install of WinXP and transfer data back to old computer that I did a clean install of WinXP.

    Thanks in advance!:)

Attach the trashed hd to the Vista computer either by putting it into an external enclosure, using an IDE to USB adapter or installing it as a slave drive in the Vista computer, if it is not a laptop.
    Examples:
Enclosure for a hd from a laptop

Enclosure for a hd from a desktop

Adapter for any type hd to a USB port on another computer

The trashed computer is a desktop running win xp the good computer is a laptop running vista. Owner of laptop says you need a special program to do this but he knows even less about computers than I do!!:-D

There's a utility called PartedMagic (partedmagic.com) which can probably do it. It downloads as an 'iso' image; burn it to a CD on the laptop, then boot your desktop computer from the CD. It boots to ram (need ~100MB) then ejects the CD, so you can use either another CD or a USB flash drive to save your info. PartedMagic's got a graphic interface so its point and click to mount the XP drive and access the files you wanna save.

Dunno what trashed your XP but one of the utility programs on the CD might be useful in trying to fix it.
