Upgrade Possibilities (DELL Dimension 2400)

    I'm planning on building a new computer in the future but for now I want to upgrade my Dell Dimension 2400 as much as possible. I'm planning to purchase a new CPU, As much memory as it can withstand, and a new hardrive.

    I no the computer has bounderies such as its limited to 478 socket processors, and the memorie is limited to DDR1. Now I'm not sure if there is a maximum hardrive size it can handle (Its IDE) so heres a report by EVEREST. Can you please tell me the most powerfull CPU I can put in it, the most memorie and the type (like 244Mhz or whatever) and the biggest hardrive or if there is a limit and possible an estimate on how much it will cost. I doubt it will be that expensive as the computer equipment is pretty much ancient.

    I can offer alittle help, as it needs thinking about a little more.
    I found that the P4 2.8 was the easiest and more stable of the P4, s- I have a 3gb presscott in my old computer which took a little working on to keep the heat down.
    Your Dell recovery disc might not work if you change too much, in one go, and might baulk at any change - someone more involved with Dell systems might come in, and give you more information on that side of it.
    Socket 478 is pretty good for alterations, and so on, although now an aging system.
    According to your spec- it will take ddr ram of pc3200, 400 fsb- upgrading ,adding more memory, will give yo a boost in performance.Having said this, I notice your present Ram is pc2700, and has a very good spd rating.
    You also have this Ram (267) matched to the chipset (qpr) to 267, and if this is original I would suggest you check with the Dell support site for their frequent QA'S, as well.
    To upgrade your ram, otherwise I suggest you let an on-line scanner from one of the main ram suppliers - Crucial do an on-line scan, and recommendation-This would ensure compatability.

    Ok thanks for that, one thing, I don't have a recovery disk, it wus on a hidden partition on the hardrive and you pushed certain keys at the bios and it pops up, i deleted that along time ago and I restore with the Windows XP Home Edition Disk which works for me.

    Your Ram is running in 4:3 ratio, and. usually shows when overcoclocking the cpu is set,--your cpu seems to be set at 24x 100 (2400)- standard .
    I am not the best when it comes to ratio,d ram, it might be worth you asking the overclocking forum for more on that.

    This does not mean you are tied to Kingston, but a start point. Your Samsung memory could be matched with another 512mb of Samsung.

    You can download your manual from Dell, and I just found it a bit conflicting, as the manual says max 2 x 512 mb (1gb) ddr pc2700 ram @333MHZ
    So I would suggest that is the option you should take.
    Also P4 up to 3.06 ghz, but 533 fsb
    or, Celeron 2.7gb at 400 fsb,

    DDR pc2700 - if yours is single sided, then get the same, if yours has banks on both sides of the ram, ditto.
    I have not had time to read all the manual, yet, but if it supportd dual channel, when both banks are filled it will run at dual channel.
