    Hi,

    Since a couple of weeks ago my computer has been running extremely slowly so that it cant really do anything except browse the web. In particular any video or music stutter, the startup time seems to have at least doubled and often task manager has 100% cpu use even when i have very little open. Opening any program is sluggish and selecting anything already running in the system tray is slow.

    I have attached the logs as requested. Please note that I had already run a couple of the anti-malware tools before I followed the proper read this first pc cleaning procedure so I thought it best to run them again in the order it says to with the settings as specified.

    It looks like the scans took care of most of it, so let's start with this:

    Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    Titan Poker

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    pjnnfagc

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\glpqv.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\Oli\Local Settings\temp\wza8b5

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Oli\Local Settings\temp\wza8b5

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet004\Services\pjnnfagc]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi Tim,

    Thanks for looking at this for me, I really appreciate it.

    I have just finished going through the instructions you have posted and attached the requested logs.

    Unfortunately I am still having problems - audio or video still wont play hardly at all, its just stuttering noises on vlc or wmp. The pc feels a bit less sluggish in general although firefox still takes a really really long time to open (forgot to mention that before, its ok once it is open though). Startup time is still far longer than it used to be too even though there are a lot less autorunning programs on there after this last cleanup.

    Ok I have begun scanning, its going to take 10 hours apparently so I will post the results tomorrow.

    Trusteer is a privacy protection thing my bank HSBC recommended I install. It was invasive and annoying so I have removed it since the last post.

    Also, dunno if you will see this in the scan but I reinstalled the Titan Poker software after the steps I took in your first post didnt solve the problems - its a legitimate well known site and im pretty confident its not malware in itself. Plus I have money on my account there I wanted to play with. Strangely every time I go to log into Titan poker some of the parts of the software are missing - casino.exe and possibly some others. Any idea whats doing this and if its pertinent to any of the slowness and sound problems?

    I have updated the sound drivers and done the normal windows check for hardware errors and troubleshooting steps by the way.

    Hi,

    I have attached the log as requested. There has been no change in my system performance since running the scan.

    Thanks.

    Your logs are clean. I suggest you post in either the software or drivers section to try to resolve your sound issues.

    Since you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to tahe cleaning procedures ian step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Sorry to post again but I just wanted to say i managed to solve the problem after a lot of googling. I have no idea why, but taking the following steps magically resolved the speed and sound issues:

    Select Start
    Select Control panel

    Select System
    Select Hardware
    Select Device Manager

    Select IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
    Select Primary IDE Channel

    Right click
    Select Uninstall

    Reboot

    Just thought I would post this here as I really have been trawling the web for the best part of a month now looking for a solution and would like to save someone else the hassle. I appreciate all the help once again and please accept my apologies for posting here again after the thread is finished. The pc is running like a dream now by the way.

    Not magic and not malware. ;) This is a well know hardware issue the popups up here and there. Your drives were switched from DMA to PIO mode which slows them down. Deleting the IDE devices and allowing them to reinstall after reboot, just set them back to DMA mode. :) Look at the Transfer Mode settings now and you will see they are set for DMA instead of PIO which is what you want.
