I just bought a laptop with Win7 Home Premium pre-installed. Every time I plug it into my router, my WinXP desktop's connection starts to yo-yo. "Network cable unplugged" .. "Local Area Connection is now connected" .. over and over.

    Here is my setup.
    = Desktop =
    WinXP Pro 2002 SP3
    Static IP: 192.168.6.2
    Workgroup: HOME

    = Printer =
    Xerox workgroup network printer
    Static IP: 192.168.6.240

These both plug into an old D-Link 614+ router (192.168.6.253) which acts like a dumb hub. I don't use WLAN port... just use one of the empty hub ports to connect it to my IPCop gateway (192.168.6.254)

When I plug the laptop into the router, it gets the dhcp lease 192.168.6.100 from the gateway. I can ping, say google.com but the connection is poor - 25% to 50% packet loss - so I guess it is yo-yoing too.

If I plug the laptop directly into my gateway, everything works just fine. Clearly the laptop is causing the router to drop the connections

.... but why? And how to I fix it?

    Thanks

    Scott

note: the Laptop's workgroup is also set to "HOME"

I bought a Belkin Surf for $45 @ walmart. Ripped out my ipcop gateway and my dlink and now everything is working.
