I'm not sure of which isolated incident that caused my player to stop working, but none-the-less it has me stomped. Can someone help?

When I try to access my dvd player I get a Microsoft error D:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. I tried to uninstall the player and reboot, but at no avail.

The only thing that I can think of is that the eDonkey program that I downloaded caused this.

Side notes: the drive is spinning...it has power based on this and light flashing on player. Also, I get the disk looking cursor on my screen when I shut the tray.

    Anyone help?

does the drive itself actually work, in that can it read any discs? It may be that it has become defective. You could try a lens cleaner.

Also you can try going into the device manager by going into the start menu, selecting run and typing devmgmt.msc. Look under cdrom/dvd drives and see if there are any problems there. One thing to try would be to uninstall the drive through the control panel, reboot and let windows redetect the drive.

In regards to the edonkey theory, go over to the spyware forum and follow the steps to check your system for malware.

I have removed my second drive (cd rom) and now I do not get that error anymore. However, when I open my DVD drive, none of the files on any of my cd's show up. Nothing displays in the window. Any ideas for me

you might not have enough power. What size is your power supply?
I know that my power supply is a measily 225 watts and when i plug in a cd drive to go with my dvd combo the computer turns on, the leds on the front of the drive work, and the door opens and closes but neither are recognized. Once I remove the cd drive the dvd drive begins to work again. This sounds a lot like your problem. Try a bigger power supply or try only plugging in your cd drive and seeing if it works because I think cd drives may take less power than dvd drives.
(also look on the back of the drive and see if the jumpers are still there and make sure the ide cable is plugged in with the blue or colored side in the motherboard.)

Thanks. However, the drive is showing up in My Computer, but when I d-click it, the drive opens, but no files appear. The window illudes to the fact that I have opened the drive (in this case the D:\ drive - Dvd Rom), but there is nothing displayed in open window....more help please

Sounds like your dvd drive died on you, Do you have another computer you could put it into to check it to make sure?
And if it is dead you can get dvd drives pretty cheaply priced around $30-$60.

what os is this, if 2000/xp try this,

go into control panel, go into classic view, administrative tools, computer management, disk management(its on the left). Maximise the screen, and on the right it will say Disk 1, Disk 2, CDROM 1 etc...

    What comes up on yours?

If there is a disk in the dvd drive, it should tell you alongside CDROM 0 or CDROM 1.

If the disk management does show something in your optical drive, then we will need to remap the drive to a different letter. Some burning programs create virtual drives and these can conflict with real drives. Reconnect your second drive also and set the hardware back to the way it was when the problem started.

are you using any programs which create virtual drives, like alcohol or daemon tools?

    It says -

    CD-ROM 0
    DVD ( D: )

    No Media

What should I try? and Thanks!

are there any others like CDROM 1 etc...?

if not, and there was a disk in the drive when you did this, I think it may be time for a new drive. You mentioned earlier you had a CDROM drive, does that work?

Well, I finally found time to try to troubleshoot this issue again and this is where I'm @. I tried switching the IDE so that is was connected only to the CD ROM (my other drive) and same thing...double click on the drive from My Computer, the window opens up with no files showing. No error or any other indication that something is wrong. Then, when I went into Admin. Tools ---> Computer Mngt --> Disc Mngt...the CD Rom shows "No Media".

So, neither of my drives display files when opened from My Computer. Then I thought maybe it was a faulty IDE cable, so I tried replacing that, but @ no avail.

Any other ideas? Any help is appreciated :)
