Whats the longest you've ever left it running without doing a re-boot or shut down for the night.

My computer itself I leave running 24/7. I'm now on day 11 without shutting down. Also I found something cool in Vista in the Task Manager under "performance" it says my computers Up Time is 267:52:59. Our upstairs computer is at day 36 with out shutting down.. :D

    yours?

Mine runs for about 18 hours, but i never leave it on overnight or when we leave the house.
Also switch the router off to save the planet :)

My desktop only goes off if there's a major thunderstorm or if I'm leaving for a period of days. I reboot (but don't turn off) when new software needs it. I think the longest it's been continuously on without even a reboot is a couple of months. Not sure, though, since I don't keep track of it.

My laptop goes off when I need to travel it out of the house.

Couldn't vote, though, because I refuse to check a box that says "until windows tells me to shut down". ;)

Home PC, generally switch off if I'm not needing it or downloading stuff.

Work PC, been on for 3 months upto now, could do with a cleanup and re-boot tho.

Mine is on all the time, mainly lately because when I shut down it take at least 4 tries to get it on. :(

Mine and my wife's are on all the time. We do shut them down if we go away for a weekend or thunderstorms.
(Lightning has to be hitting in my yard before I shut mine down though. LOL)

This is a 'temporary' backup fileserver at work! P4 1.6Ghz running in a cupboard with no UPS on Windows 2000. Getting on for over a year now. The password violations happen every time I have to change my domain password and forget to log out of this PC! My official home drive is limited to 5GB which isn't enough for my ghost images.

My main PC at home rarely gets switched off. Every now and again I switch it off when I go to bed, then try to play some music or comedy on the laptop which promptly fails 'cos it's all stored on my main computer which I just switched off!

Mine are rarely shut down. I had one of my folding borgs on so long, when it did require a reboot, I forgot my root password... Had to format the sucker! :D Write down my passwords now.

Long debated from PC life to power useage. I feel each person should do whats best, the casual user should shut off, power user might be inclined to not shut off unless needed. Im online about 16 hours a day, I shut down nightly. Why? I am paranoid. PC that is not online (24\7 broadband) cant be hacked, fans and important hardware wont fail while i sleep, it won't catch fire (lots of dust and dog hair for example) and so on, nothing more then that. I always feared my hardware would die faster, but again, there really is no solid data on this as each user is different.

I've never left my variuos desktops / laptops on for more time than I need to.

Living in Tropical Australia for the best part of 30+ years, I don't trust our weather. Storms, lightning, Cyclones etc., put the wind up me. Longest time on would probably be around 4 hours daily.

After my Major Geeks daily session (around 2-3 hours) I turn my laptop off. I used to unplug both the laptop and modem connection as well. Now, with decent surge protection and individual on/off switches I just turn off the laptop and modem power switches. Call me paranoid. :D Bazza

For me It depends on the computer and how often I use it, I left one of my computers on for a good 8 months strait without any use at all- till a thunderstorm came to town and a power surge K.O'd that computer.

I generally turn off all laptops at night along with anything with a light that could keep me up, or I'll leave it on if it's doing something important and throw something dark over it and tell it to turn itself off when it's done doing whatever. Desktops though I usually leave them on for some reason, unless there's something seriously important on it.

The comp is on from 7 am to 2 am next morning.I shut down the comp cos here in Skopje we have big power downs and up's like 160-245v,so in the night when we sleep everything is posible.

My desktop and the other half's usually run 24/7. Just how I've done things for so long. Granted, I also leave mine on all the time because I have a tendency to get some inspiration for some grafx work or a new music mix at random times and I like to be able to walk back here and work, not have to start up and all.

WIth all the crap I run while this machine is up, it tends to take a little bit to start up :)

The P.C.'s I 'play' with are usually on 12-18hrs/day. I don't leave them on any longer than necessary. The price of electric power in this state ensures I don't waste any more than I have to. Even so, people get amazed at my power bill. When I'm thinking it's good few months, power-wise, everyone else is gasping at how much my power bill is. That said, the work servers stay on 24/7, from necessity, apart from scheduled, (occasionally, unscheduled!), maintenance.
