I like many others, am not able to install my HD audio sound drivers. It is on a fresh XP install, and I have tried a number of times uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling the Microsoft hotfix. I can not get it to work, any suggestions?

    This is what Intel has to say about that;
When installing Sigmatel or Realtek audio drivers (either from the Express Installer CD or using the latest driver download available from the web), the installation may fail with either of the following error messages:
    * Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again.
    * The system does not support the driver you are attempting to install.

The Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver for Windows* may be corrupted or causing problems with the audio driver installation.
To resolve this, try the following:
    1. Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
    2. Look for the following two items: Realtek* High Definition Audio Driver and High Definition Audio driver Package - KB888111.
    3. If these items are listed in Add/Remove programs, remove them.
    4. Restart Windows.
    5. Download the latest audio driver for your PC.
    6. Double-click the filename to extract the files.
    7. Go to the folder where the files have been extracted and browse to the \HDAQFE\xpsp2\us\ folder or the \MSHDQFE\Win2K_XP\us\ folder. (The name of this folder depends on your PC model.)
    8. Double-click the file kb888111xpsp2.exe to install the High Definition Audio Driver Package.
    9. Restart Windows.
    10. Install the audio driver.

    This is a similar fix.
    1) Uninstall the Realtek software through Add/Remove Programs (if it's installed but not working)
    2) In Device Manager, remove the high definition audio device under Sound, Video & Game controllers.
    3) Still in Device Manager, double-click Legacy Audio Drivers
    4) Click on the Properties tab
    5) Select any sound device listed here and click the Remove button
    6) Restart Windows and retry the installation.
You may need to remove any instances of the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio listed under System devices as well.

Also to add to the above info, make sure you install the chipset/motherboard drivers before you try to install audio drivers.

I already said that I have already tried that. And I do already have chipset drivers installed.

Instead of guessing what you haven't tried I need to know what you have tried.
Why do you have a fresh XP install? Did you downgrade from Vista?
Do you have an unknown device in your device manager?
    Did you:
    Check: Master Volume control.
Check: Windows Audio Service is started.
Check: Device Manager for bad drivers.
Check: Your audio mixer software (if installed) for a setting that mutes back panel audio if you have plugged headphones into a front panel audio solution. Uncheck: this setting to allow audio to both the back and front.
Check: BIOS to insure on-board sound is enabled.
Check: In the Device Manager under System devices and un-install the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio.
Install: the correct Chipset and Audio drivers.

If you did all this, then we need some system info: If you have a retail PC, post the manufacturer name and model #
Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers. Upload the report as an attachment

Actually, you never said the part about chipset drivers. Remember, the more info you give us, the more help we can give you. :)

Their is no master volume control, because their is no sound device installed.
    The service is started.
Their are no sound drivers installed, so their are no bad drivers.
I have no mixer software installed.
Sound is not disabled in the bios.
    The chipset drivers are installed.

I forgot to mention that when I try to install the drivers I get the error "Realtek HD Audio Setup Failure!"

I will get the everest report in a minute.

    You tried doing this also?
In the Device Manager under System devices, un-install the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio. Then try installing the driver.

  9. spenc938

    spenc938 Private E-2

When I tried to install after doing that it gave me a different error which said something like, you should install the bus driver before proceeding, I hit ok, it seemed to install, I restarted, the found new hardware wizard popped up, it still wasn't installed, so I tried to install again, and am now getting the original error I was getting.

There is no motherboard info, without that I have no clue as to what kind of audio you may have.
    Try the report this way:
Click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware-related Pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Click "go advanced" in the MajorGeeks reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "manage attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit.

Apparently there are two patches for the UAA and the second is interfering with the driver installs. You must install SP2 and no other updates prior to the motherboard and Realtek driver updates.

I basically did it that way, I just copy and pasted instead of uploading the file. The motherboard is an EVGA with an Nvidia 590SLI Chipset.
The first thing I installed was SP2. Most drivers won't install without SP2. I then did chipset, display, and attempted to do audio.

I'm trying to get a link to the motherboard, but EVGA's site is going slow. I'll edit once I get it.

Edit: the audio is Realtek ALC882D

    Try this one more time.
Go into Device Manager, under the system folder, right click the UAA
Hi-Def Bus driver. Disable the device and then uninstall it.
You should be able to load the Realtek driver, if it is the right one.
Reboot and let me know if it still isn't installing.... I'm off to nVidia and EVGA.

Is this the driver you are trying to install?
Driver Version : 1.83 - EVGA Recommended Download

    Download links included.

The Driver I am using came I think from Realtek's website. It was a .zip file with a bunch of crap.

This is your motherboard chipset driver. Was this what you installed?

Driver Version : 8.44 - EVGA Recommended Download
    Driver File : 8.44_nforce_650i_winxp32_english.exe

    It must be installed first.

  16. spenc938

    spenc938 Private E-2

That isn't my chipset. That looks like it is for a 650i chipset. I have a 590SLI. I get my chipset driver from Nvidia, because theirs is usually more up to date.

I tried the other driver you gave me and it still wouldn't install.

Thanks for all the help, but I think I'm just going to use an Audigy 2 that I have lying around. I took it out because Creative's Vista drivers suck, so I'll just use the Realtek for Vista, and the Creative for XP.

Ok at this point just to be sure we're on the same page.

Uninstall the Realtek driver package through Add/Remove Programs.
Install your chipset driver: Driver File : 8.44_nforce_650i_winxp32_english.exe
    Reboot
Install your audio driver: Driver File: WDM_R183.exe
    FTP / HTTP
    Reboot

Their is no Realtek driver to uninstall. I can't install it in the first place.
The chipset drivers have already been installed (and by the way those are the wrong ones)
I have done everything you said, and they still will not install.

I'm just going to use an extra sound card that I have lying around.

I found the problem. Because I have two operating systems installed, XP is on E instead of C. When I installed the chipset drivers, they assumed that the operating system was on C, so they installed on C. Install those in the correct partition, and everything is fine.

    Hi Musksnipe,

For nearly a week I have toiled in absolute silence with the same problem.
I came upon this thread this morning.
For me the deal maker was the UAA doodad.
It wouldn't let me install initially as it said "needs for booting"
The "disable then uninstall" advice you gave and I stole :-o sorted it.
Prior to this I put the P5N-MX driver disc in, it says you need to install these drivers, I wait for 10 minutes watching the graphic of the sheet of paper going from one folder to another.
When it finally reboots it STILL says no drivers installed. Done that 20-30 times recently.
You did the business for my problem.
Thank you sincerely, and I'm sorry I was evesdropping.:highfive

    this thread is quite old..:)
    anyways,
it's just a classic type of not paying attantion to small details.
it was getting more and more obvious as it went on.
it happens when one breaks his head searching for a culprit he's sure to exist,
like changing bulbs and playing with the remote while the cable is out of the plug..:-D..;)

But how the heck would you know you remove the UAA driver?
I'll know now though, thanks to you guys.
Have a great weekend, all of ya.:wave

you probably wouldn't, but thats the benefit of these "documents", as they give away all the possible issues, so next time, everyone's watching it, would be able to be fixing it by he's/her's own! :)
it just teaches you alot! :) ;)
