PC World Magazine has had some great how to build your own PC articles, Check out sept 2004 issue, they have had several such articles in the past.
    Same with PC shopper magazine.

Depends entirley on how good you want it to be. I think a good budget for a fairly decent system is bout $700 these days.

The PC I have listed in the signature I built with a $800 budget. The only things I didn't include in the budget (or the signature for that matter... hmm... woops) that I added later on (some yesterday, actually) are the extra 512MB of memory, the new case, and the sound board.

I bought the barton core CPU, asus mobo, cheapo $35 case, video card (trade-up deal at ATI.com), 512 memory, AS5 thermal paste, floppy, 80GB SATA, and an extra 80mm sunon fan for just over $700. I already had a combo drive and a monitor. It's 7 months old, and this thing will still run modern games beatifully (thanks to the $200 video card... 200 now thanks to the trade up dealy).

I got everything cept the vid card, monitor, and combo from NewEgg (and I'll bet you most of the items on that list have dropped in price. i.e. you can probably get the xp 3000+ or the athlon 64 2800+ for what I paid for my CPU).

Hope that gave you some ideas. :)

Maximum PC is a really good magazine that frequently has articles about building PCs. They also usually have lists about top of the products that have had a drop in price. So, maybe you should check out their magazine, and I think they post some of the articles online ( http://www.maximumpc.com/ ) too. I used one of their guides to get my own custom system last year, at a computer show near me for about $800. I can put up the specs later if anyone is interested, but I'm not at that computer at the moment.

oo well, i was lookin at motherboards, and i seen like all of them that say (for example) one that says "Abit BE7-II 845PE & Celeron 2.7GHz" does that mean that the motherboard comes with that processer? or does it mean that at max it can hold a 2.7GHz processor? oo and what are PCI slots?

ya i kno.. i looked, it says "Peripheral Component Interconnect - Slot card interface. PCI is a standardized architecture that provides a high-speed data path between peripherals and the CPU." ... im like ... ooohh .. wtf is that!?? lol

Yes, but read the fine print, got specific questions contact company, ask here.

    I would avoid celeron & duron processors/cpu's!

Go with AMD athlon XP series (a nice one, at great prices XP 2500 333fsb) or latest greatest Athlon 64's, or Pentinum 4 (more expensive than Athlons)
For the moment the 64's have the edge on the pentiums.

Motherboards, I'd reccomend ASUS, Abit, Gigabyte, stick to big name manufacture.

also 40, pci cards go in pci slots. they are the white-ish slots on your motherboard (unless you have a board with different colored slots) and there are usually 3-6 of them on newer boards.
