What services are you trying to re start? Some services depend on other services to be running before you can re start them. Some services will not start if windows doesn't need them at the time you are trying to start them.

Try the program from the link and then post again.

    Hi Right_Clicked :)
You do have some services there i noticed that are started which you may not need for example secondary login? You must remember to keep your list as short as possible unless you are a power user who is using all of the services that are running otherwise your computer will run slow. A good guide can be found here should you need any additional help then please do ask

You might need to re-install your drivers for any printers or try going into the properties and re-enable the hardware. Same goes for your sound devices. If your using a router for sharing you might have to reset it.

Check your device manager for any problems with your hardware.

If worst comes to worst you might need a repair install of Windows.

just so you know, if you "disable"ed the service, it has to be reenabled (set the drop down box to automatic) andthen try starting it again, if you havn't done that yet

I read through it and it looks like the person went with my Repair install suggestion. It might be the easiest and/or quickest thing to do.

Did you try msconfig > Normal Startup?

Do you not have a copy of XP Home/Pro with SP2 already?

If you have only the SP1 version you can still do a repair install. What your doing is fine but if you are having problems you can repair install with with your disk and download SP2 later on.

    What is the exact error?

If the disk cant over write the files that are already on your computer you might have bigger problems that we thought.

You have SP2 on the disk.

Click on the browse button and go to i386 folder on you XP Pro SP2 disk, you will find the SP2 cab in there. Click on the file and hit O.K.

It sounds like set up is asking for the file it needs.

If it fails again take out the disk and re boot the system normally.

You have to boot from the hard drive. If you get the message wait untill you get the option to cancel the set up and then click ok to cancel set up.

  39. BirdBath

You shouldn't have to extract SP1.

What happens when you get the error? Do you have an option to Ignore?

If you do continue with the install and see if you can boot when it's finished.

If the install just halts at this point you might have no choice but to reformat and clean install.

    Good Day To You BirdBath,

After i get Error, All i can do is say Ok or Cancel if i choose to cancel i get dropdown menu asking for where to get asms file from D:\i386 which is on the retial disk i have looked.

if choose ok it restarts the pc restarting windows install...... all over again
as far as sp1 it was just a though that this is the fault, but thats not true because it does ask for win xpsp2 after it restarts... one would think if disk were bad it shouldnt work with any other Fresh install..no,? not just one but three were completed with out problems.
Swapped out cd-rom drive no change.
with wins new Crap on the way i just can't see buying new Xp Disk you know..:D

    Thanks BB

When you search the disk the file that windows is asking for to go on with the install is there. You can highlight the file it wants and choose Open on the menu. It should continue with the install.

It sounds like the disk is fine you just have to choose the file it wants to copy to your drive.
