My son turned off the computer without shutting down properly. Now, the computer will not start. The first screen comes up like it's going to load but after that it goes black. I tried to "start windows normally," tried "safe mode" and I tried "last known configuration that worked" and nothing happens. the bar on the bottom comes up like it might load then everything just goes black and it stops there never gets to the blue screen. I have a windows XP. Please help.

So you can't get in to Safe Mode? That's going to reduce some of our chances of getting it working. What happens when you try selecting safe mode?

Do you have your XP CD available?

Nothing happens when I try safe mode. No matter what mode it just goes black. I didn't know if there was anything I could do. I don't have the XP disk for that computer but I do have my Xp disk for my second computer.

Here, I'm going to presume that on your computer you have 2 video outputs. One built into the motherboard, and the other from a PCI/AGP/PCI-e card. If this is incorrect on my part, please disregard the following paragraph.

When you turn your computer on, enter the BIOS (by hitting Del or F2 when you boot) and find a setting relating to graphics output. Usually, you will find an option to
select between onboard and another. Determine what output your monitor is plugged in to and select the appropriate option, save and reboot. If there is no change or worse, then simply select the original option in the BIOS.

If that doesn't work, then we'll try a repair of XP. That disc will do just fine, as long as it has the option to repair the installation. Turn the computer on, insert the CD, and make sure your computer will boot from a CD (by going in to the BIOS, and select the CD drive as the first boot device, and the HDD second. Insert your XP CD now, and save the BIOS settings and reboot.

If you see a message reading: "Press any key to boot from CD..." press any key to boot the CD. It'll whirr around for a minute or two then give you some options. You want to select Install, and then Repair the windows installation. It'll then go about its business, reboot a few times, and hopefully you will be presented with a fresh desktop. Your files should be safe, but if you haven't made backups then you will need to find out about how to do that, or just take the risk.

    I hope this helps!

Similar occurrence for a friend's machine but what I did was that I just left it running. It eventually booted to the desktop after 20-30 minutes and the machine worked ok after that irregularity.
