    Hello!

I quickly searched the forums to get an answer, but apparently there weren't anything on the subject.

So, someone I know clicked on one of those spam links you can get through one of your contacts in your MSN list and he was dumb enough to install the program that was linked....

Then, I got myself a spam link from him and I clicked the URL, but when it asked me where I would install the program, I clicked on cancel.

Now my question is; is it possible, in any case, that I got something or got infected or anything else just by clicking the link? It only popped that box to ask me where to install the .exe and I clicked on cancel... so I was wondering if I could have still been infected even if I didn't install anything or am I just being paranoid?

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
No offense but it was just as foolish for you to click the link as it was for your friend to install it. In fact it was even more foolish if you already knew your friend had picked up malware this way.

Yes it is possible that just clicking the link infected you. Are you experiencing any unusual behavior?

No, in fact, I haven't even reopened msn just in case. I just don't want to **** anything up.

But at that time, I didn't know he was infected and I clicked that link without even reading the url, without even thinking what it may be, so it's when I saw it was a .exe that I realized what it was about. If I'd read it, I would not have clicked it... it wasn't the first time I see something like that.

I ran ad-aware, but I don't know if I should do something else... if somebody knows something about this kind of virus/trojan/whatever

    and thanks for the welcome!

Actually you have not given us enough specifics to know exactly what it could be. There are hundreds of things like this.

If you are worried that you may have picked something up, run the below procedure.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
