Windows hiding the running programs?

    Windows hiding the running programs?

    [font=verdana, arial, helvetica]is there a way to turn the running programs running in the system tray? somehow it's not being displayed. when i minimize programs, they dont show up there.[/font]

    Not positive what you're asking. Are you trying to kill programs that are running in the System Tray? If so, which programs, and what operating system are you using?

    We need more details.

    If you are using XP then set by default the less used items in the try are hidden but you can turn this feature off ...... Start > Settings > Task Bar & Start Menu > and untick "Hide Inactive Icons" then they all will show.

    or if you click Customise you can set each programs icon to your own preferences.

    You may also like to download this free tool from merijn
    StartupList (zipped): A simple tool that lists all and every auto starting program on your system. You might be surprised what it finds, this is way better than Msconfig. Commonly used to troubleshoot malfunctioning systems, trojan/viral infections, new spyware/malware breed and the likes.

    when i start AIM for instance, usually, when i minimize it, it goes into the system tray by the clock, but it isn't. it disappears & doesnt show up down there. all thats there is the clock.

    can you please tell us what operating system you are using otherwise were shooting in the dark ;)

    it won't let me click on "customize" down there. it's grayed out.

    hi calcnerd
    go to control panel--taskbar and start menu--and check the hide inactive icons box and apply the customise option should now be available

    that's grayed out as well. can't click it.

    ok thats very strange did you read the link i posted earlier from microsoft
    and if so did you try locking the taskbar

    does it work in another user account

    just created another account w/ admin rights, and it does have the system tray now, but when i switch back to my acct, it doesnt

    ok somethings gone wrong somewhere can you open regedit
    start-run-type regedit
    find this key

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
    "NoTrayItemsDisplay"=dword:00000000

    and see if it looks like that or if its got a 1 on the end

    you want it to look like the one ive displayed

    hi calcnerd ive got to go to bed so i was going to run through some regediting with you but if you havent fixed it ill be back tomorrow

    in the meantime try this
    start--run--gpedit.msc--user configuration--administrative templates--select start menu and taskbar--look in the right window for hide the notificartion area--try disabling this and rebooting

    i just use the new account. i transferred all my stuff & deleted the old one. good enough. thanks.
