Apparently I have picked up a virus when downloading a file to test a failing graphics card. Started with ads powered by Define Ext showing up everywhere. I have Norton 360 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium installed so I ran those two immediately and they picked up pups and pums and quarantined them. That got rid of the ads but when I opened a new tab in Chrome, it said it couldn't connect to the proxy server, same thing in IE and Firefox. I don't have a proxy server. I changed the settings back and could open one tab, but if I opened a new tab it would say the same thing again. Looking online for solutions, one suggestion was to check program files for all recent installations, found three that installed the same day as the graphic card test program.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Common Dictionary\node (I was able to delete this file completely)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Diagnostics\node with a handful of files under it; conf, copy, diagnostics, install, nsis.json, source.info, system, temp.json and uninstall. Tried uninstall, nothing. Was able to manually delete all the files under "node" but not "node" or "Diagnostics". Said it could not be deleted because the folder or file is open in another program.

The third program was called Tidy Network and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware took care of it.

Another suggestion was to bring up Task Manager Processes and Services and look for unusual things that are running. Nothing weird in Processes but in Services I found one called Proxy Service. It's executable path was "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Diagnostics\node\service.exe -s C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Diagnostics\node\proxy_master.js

same folder I was trying to delete...I disabled it and IE and Firefox started connecting correctly, but not Chrome. So I uninstalled Chrome and will reinstall once this mess is gone.

    In Services I also found:

(Auto start up) (Local Service) Diagnostic Policy Service (path: C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNoNetwork

(Manual start up) (Local Service) Diagnostic Service Host (path: C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalService

(Manual start up) (Local System) Diagnostic System Host (path: C:\Windows\System32\scvhost.exe -k LocalSystemNetworkRestricted

I didn't touch any of these since I don't know if they are legit or not, but the next one........

(Auto start up) (Local System) Diagnostics (path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Diagnostics\node\diagnostics.js

I disabled and stopped this service, went back to Program Files and was able to delete it.

Then I found Major Geeks and read the "Read and Run" and downloaded the files and ran the scans and want to know what to do next about the things that showed up in the various scans, logs are attached. Malwarebytes log is three logs in one showing what it picked up on earlier scans as the most recent scan came up clear.

Re: In browsers (IE, Firefox and Chrome) message states "unable to connect to proxy s

Re run Hitman Pro and have it fix all that I list here, including the proxy entry.

[IMG] Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Re run Hitman Pro and attach log.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    logs are attached.

Based on Hitman Pro, should I go ahead and delete Amazon Music? It's a free thing for being an Amazon Prime member, but I'm pretty sure I could live without it, especially if it's monitoring connections.:)

Re: In browsers (IE, Firefox and Chrome) message states "unable to connect to proxy s

If you'd like to then yes carry on, have Hitman delete those.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    • O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [SpUninstallDeleteDir] rmdir /s /q "\SearchProtect" (User 'SYSTEM')
    • O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [SpUninstallDeleteDir] rmdir /s /q "\SearchProtect" (User 'Default user')
    • O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Delete this:
    • C:\SearchProtect

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Re: In browsers (IE, Firefox and Chrome) message states "unable to connect to proxy s

I ran HJT, and deleted what you recommended. No problems. I have attached the MG Tools log. Thank you so much for all of your help! I have reinstalled Google Chrome and it connects to the internet just the way it should so everything seems to be back to normal. Is there anything else I should do?

Re: In browsers (IE, Firefox and Chrome) message states "unable to connect to proxy s

    Excellent. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
