Ok, I'm stumped. Windows Media Player crashes 90% of the time when I try to play a .avi file. (I say 90% because there are a few .avi files that it will sometimes play. I can't find any discernible difference between the files that it will play and the files that it won't play.)

It WILL play movies from a dvd, and it will also play audio files. I've tried installing new codecs from
    http://www.free-codecs.com/FFDShow_download.htm
but no luck. I'm on the verge of just trying to uninstall wmp and reinstall it.

I would try a rollback(uninstall) and try the version that is there before you reinstall.
