I want to update my BIOS on my motherboard. I have a updated BIOS driver on my PC I merely need to start the installer script. But I decided to wait till I backed up my current BIOS because I tend to have bad luck. I read the driver's readme and following the directions there I have confirmed it is the correct driver for my specific BIOS at least as far as the driver's readme is concerned. But I still want to back up my current BIOS just in case something happens. I don't have a spare BIOS chip or motherboard nor anyway to remove my current BIOS chip. So my question is this. Is there anyway to backup my current BIOS to a blank DVD (which is all I have here) in case something goes wrong and if so how do I recover if need be in the future?

Is there a particular reason to update your bios? Is something not working properly? Newer (bios) is not always better. If everything is working as it should you should not update unless something is non-functional.

The catch 22 with the bios is,,, it contains all the information for your hardware on that motherboard. If it (the bios) gets cacked, the motherboard won't function. It doesn't matter what you have the backup on (media) as it won't run the hardware to read the media. It usually means a new/replacement bios chip to get the board functional again.

What kind of motherboard do you have? Gigabit has a program called @BIOS which does everything for you - Downloads the updated BIOS, backs up the old and installs it for you too.

Well I have a Gateway PC that was purchased from Tiger Direct.com. I did some homework I know it's a Schroeder motherboard as for specifics I have no idea. I read the readme for the drivers and went into system information and the BIOS there that the driver is for all matches up. I checked again in Everest and again I supposedly have the right BIOS I just want to make sure. But from what your telling me theres no easy way.

The reason I want to upgrade the BIOS is to hopefully fix a random restart bug that does a total restart of the PC even powering it down in order to reboot it. I read on one discussion forum that it is a inherit problem with the BIOS and how it handles the CPU cooling system. I have a gateway GM5478 model desktop PC.
