Chkdsk/f.

    Hi
I recently got some very good advice and help on this forum regarding spyware, so when I got an error message on my laptop today, I hoped I could get some answers here.

I'm trying to run disc defragmentation. Lately my laptop use more time starting up, and opening the IE when clicking the ikon for internet.

When I tried to run disc defragmentation I got a message which I never seen before. (Actually never previously got any error messages when doing disc defragmentation).
The message say: "Disc defragmentation has discovered that Chkdsk is planned to run on volume (C:). Run Chkdsk/f."
Don't know if the words are 100% correct translated, but I guess you understand anyway (I'm running a Norwegian version of XP). The disc defragmentation will not run.

I've tried to google and found that this means that there is something wrong, and that the "f" means that the computer will fix errors.

However - where am I supposed to write this command? (In "run"?) Anything I need to do before I do so - or is this OK?

Another question - how do I get rid of WINDOWS Messenger? Windows messenger tries to install now and then. I already have MSN messenger and do not want Windows messenger running as well. Haven't been able to delete this. Any tips?

Any advice would be highly appreciated :)

P.S. This posting might be listed under the wrong thread at this forum, not sure where to post it.

Try to restart Windows, and it should perform the scheduled chkdsk automaticly.

It is possible to uninstall Messenger using Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel (Part of Windows Components)

Well I've restarted Windows about 20 times without any luck beeing able to run a disc defragmentation. How do I run a Chkdsk/f manually?

The Winodws messenger is not listed in the "Add/remove" windows. This is maby because it tries to INSTALL (not RUN) now and then. I abort the installation of course, since I dont want it.

I remember beeing able to get rid of windows messenger by write a ver long key after clicking "Start" and then "Run" last year, but I don't remember what the key was.

Open the command prompt window, and type in chkdsk /f. It'll probably tell you it can't run the chkdsk because the volume is in use, but it'll ask if you want to run it upon reboot. Choose 'yes' and reboot.

Not sure if I'm doing this correct. Tried this, but still not able to do a disc defragmentation.

I'm wondering if I'm doing it wrong. What is: "open command prompt"? I tried to click "start" then "run" and wrote: "chkdsk /f." but and then OK - but not much happening. Is the command correct? Note I'm writeing chkdsk (space)/f and the "." as well.

    Leave the " marks off.

chkdsk/f is asking for check disk to be run and fix any errors as it is being done.

you click the start button, the run. in the window that pops up, type cmd. It should bring up a dos prompt where you type the chkdsk /f command.

I'm still not sure what to write since I get mixed suggestions.
I'll of course leave out the ", but some state that there is a empty space between chkdsk and /f and then there is the question about the . as well.

Well - to make it easier - what alternative would be the right one:

    a) chkdsk/f
    b) chkdsk/f.
    c) chkdsk /f
    d) chkdsk /f.

    ?

This may sound strange, but I'm afraid of doing something wrong.

Heh, did you look in the "Windows Components" section of Add/Remove programs? There's a little button to the right of the list that you have to press to expose these apps. Uncheck the box next to Windows Messenger, and click next.

  13. hei

    hei Private E-2

Not sure what's suppose to happend when doing this. I did open the command prompt and wrote option C and got an message which was the same as the error message when trying to run disc defragmentation.

"The system is running NTFS and will check C after reboot"

I rebooted and then again tried to run disc defragmentation, but still get the same error message.
    Any tips at all?

  14. hei

    hei Private E-2

No "little button" to the right in my add/remove program list. None of the programmes got any button to the right. The only options is on top of the page where I may choose "Show up dates as well".

Anyway I did what I was told and it seems to be running OK, but I'm not able to find any listing of the programme WINDOWS messenger in any lists, though I do have installed it a couple of hours ago. The MSN messenger 7.0 is listed in "Add/remove programmes", but this program I want to keep.

This Windows messenger is a huge problem, why don't Microsoft remove it when MSN is installed...this is just annoyning.

  15. Mada_Milty

    Mada_Milty MajorGeek

My mistake; they're to the left!
And there should be buttons there, if not, something is seriously wrong! Hitting Alt + W at the add/remove programs dialog has the same effect as pressing the button. Try both.

  16. hei

    hei Private E-2

I searched on Add/remove and found what I belive you meant.

Yes I did find some icons to the left and did find all the different products from Windows listed. The Windows Messenger was ticked, so I un-ticked it. Hopefully this will help.

However the other problem regarding beeing able to do a disc defragmentation is a bit more tricky.

  17. Mada_Milty

I agree. I had the same problem. You're on XP right? You could try this:

insert your installation CD for windows XP
click start --> run, type sfc /scannow (exactly like that), and press enter. When it completes, try a defrag again!
IIRC, this is what work for me.

  18. snakefoot

    snakefoot Sergeant Major

Maybe the BootExecute option is misconfigured, so it is only able to set the dirty bit but never remove it again.

Try to open a command prompt (cmd) and enter this command:

  19. hei

    hei Private E-2

I opened "start" then "run", and printed "cmd" and then "CHKNTFS /D" but nothing happend. The same line came again....wrote the same CHKNTFS /D
    once more and nothing happend.

Is it supposed to be an empty space between "CHKNTFS" and the "/D"??

Sorry, but this is not my cup of tea...need very spesific instructions.

  20. snakefoot

    snakefoot Sergeant Major

It doesn't matter whether you put an empy space between CHKNTFS and /d. Chkntfs doesn't give any output, so unless it said the command wasn't recognized, then you did it right.

Though whether it solved the problem can only be seen when trying to restart the computer.

  21. hei

    hei Private E-2

OK - then I did it correctly, but nothing changed. Still not possible to run disc defragmentation

Maybe check your Event Viewer (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools) and see if any errors about the disk being bad.

  23. hei

    hei Private E-2

Not able to find anything called "Administrative tools" on my computer.
Nor is there any Norwegian words corresponding with the English word "Administrative Tools".
I'm running the Norwegian verion of XP. My options are (translated by me):
    Add/remove programmes
    Security center
    Sound speach loudspeakers
    Maintenance
    User accounts
    Printers and other
    Internett-connections
    Date time languages regional settings

Believe that the group "Performance and Maintenance" includes the Administrative Tools. (Or just switch to Classic View)

  25. hei

    hei Private E-2

Yes found it now. Not sure what to look for though. No info that anything is wrong.
    Aministrative tools have these options/icons:
    Data-sources (ODBC)
    Datamaskinbehandling/PC actions(?)
    Hendelsesliste/list of actions
    Servertillegg-administrator/ server-add-administrator(?)
    Tjenester/services
    Ytelse/performance

All icons are short cuts from what I can see...

  26. snakefoot

Then I guess that "Hendelsesliste/list of actions" is the Event Viewer.

  27. hei

    hei Private E-2

Yes - figured that out....and been there and I have 3 lists:
    Program
    Security
    System

In the list of Program there are som Warnings (yellow triangels) and some Errors. In the Security list there are just a long list, and in System there are a few warnings and a couple og errors.
    All lists are pretty long.
Any special word, listing I'm looking for?

  28. hei

Trying to go thru the lists and the errors, but so far I don't know if the errors I found should cause any problems running disc defragmentation

If any recent System-Errors, then you can post them here and maybe it can explain the behavior.

Btw. do you have installed any 3rd party disk fragmenters like Disk Keeper, Perfect Disk etc. ?

Another possible attempt could be the following:

    Hi
I have not installed any 3.rd party disk fragmenters to my knowledge.

Well, searched thru the system list and found some errors which looks most suspect. I manged to copy them. The last error listed below is in the list 3-4 times. Do this tell you anything? Hope you are OK with the Norwegian, or do I have to translate?

    Now I tried this twice:

    1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check.
    2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
    3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
    4. Check the Automatically fix file system errors check box,
    5. Check the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box
    6. Click Start.
    7. Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

The result both times after rebooting:

"Kan ikke åpne volumet for direkte tilgang"
"Cannot/not able to open the volume (C: ) for direct access"

    This message came both times.

Roughly Translated - Filesystem structure is damaged and cannot be used. Perform chkdsk of the volume C:

This is bad and I recommend that you backup any documents/mails/adresses/favorite homepages etc. before attempting to repair this.

To repair this you need a Windows XP install CD and boot into the recovery console where you can execute this command:
Though I would probably never use the disk again for storing any vital data.

  34. hei

    hei Private E-2

From what I understand I will be getting the option "recovery" when inserting the XP CD?
Never used this CD since XP already was installed when I got the laptop.

Actually everything is running fine, except disc defragmentation. If I use the recovery consule I perhaps will need to install everything from scratch afterwards?
Used a week to get the wireless internet connection installed properly, will I be needing to configure this again?

Anyway - have to find the XP-CD first.

OK, but not sure what you mean by:
    3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console

What is a dual boot computer? My laptop(XP has two "user accounts", one for me, anf for "guests". Is this what you mean by dual-boot?

  37. snakefoot

    snakefoot Sergeant Major

Dual-/Multi-boot is when having installed several versions of Windows on the same machine. Where it is then possible to change between them at bootup. Seems you can ignore this step as it is not the case with your laptop.

  38. hei

Yes you are right...only got one XP on my laptop. However I'm concerned this action with recovery-CD will cause me more problem than not doing anything at all. Would it be unvice to take back-ups and just continue using the laptop just the way it is right now. Defragmentation is the only thing I've discovered is wrong.

  39. snakefoot

Not sure the conquences of using a disk drive which has bad sectors, which haven't been marked properly, when using Windows XP.

If the damage gets worse then the Chkdsk will not help you in the long run. If the damaged parts doesn't expand, then it will help Windows from not using the damaged parts.

I was able to change the setteings so the laptop started from CD-ROM.

I started the pc with the XP-CD installed in drive D. I stopped the log on process and the XP started to be "Installed".....after a while I got this message:

"STOP C: 0000221 Unknown hard error
    systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll"

I shut down the pc and restarted it. Everythings seem to be running just the same as before trying to repair XP.

Any tips what to do beside buying a new laptop?

It will also NOT mark the broken sectors as bad, to keep using them again (Maybe the reason it cannot re-install). Chkdsk c: /f /r is required to do that, as mentioned before.
